Dragon Ball GT : A Hero's Legacy

One hundred years after the end of Dragon Ball GT, Pan is the only surviving member of the Z Fighters. She takes care of and trains Goku Jr., her one and only grandchild. It is unknown who his parents were nor what happened to them. Goku Jr. is a very timid person, to the point where he wouldn't fight Puck, a bully who constantly picks on him. Suddenly, Pan fell unconscious one day after Goku came home from school early after an encounter with Puck. Goku considers himself "weak" while he actually has potential, just like other Saiyan-Human hybrids.

After Pan falls unconscious, she and Goku go to Satan City Hospital. While in her bed, Pan tries to encourage Goku to have courage, and that he is special because he is much like Son Goku himself, but to no avail. Goku, seemingly having low self-esteem, retaliates by saying that he'll never be strong. In one final, futile attempt, Pan says to Goku "Be brave and no one can ever beat you." Afterwards, Pan faints for the second time, and the doctors react quickly. One nurse leads Goku to the waiting room, and he asks if his grandma will be okay. The nurse, however, does not and cannot answer his question, and Goku bursts out of the hospital in the pouring rain, running and crying the way home alone.

Back home, Goku hopes his grandma won't die, but then remembers that he could retrieve a Dragon Ball to make Pan better again. The next morning, he sets out for the Dragon Ball and encounters Puck and his gang along the way. One of Puck's friends asks where Goku is headed, and he tells them Mount Paozu. Goku faces put-downs from the gang, telling him he can't go there because there are monsters of all sorts and that he is a coward. The put-downs eventually make him angry, and he tells them to get out of his way. He walks by the gang and proceeds down the road to Mount Paozu. After following the road for hours, he rests for a moment. A truck passes by, and the truck driver offers him a ride. Goku accepts the driver's offer. After driving for a while, the truck driver pulls over and tells Goku to relieve himself because the trip will be long. While Goku is doing business, the truck driver empties his oversized book bag (which is full of food), and throws the bag onto Goku, and speeds off. Goku, surprised, shrugs it off and continues the long journey to Mount Paozu. He meets Puck yet again at a roadside grocery store, who tells him that he became bored and thought it was interesting if he went to Mount Paozu with him, admitting that it would be fun to see a monster eat Goku.

To acquire supplies for the long journey, Puck steals a cart full of food with Goku and escapes the grocery store just in time. While taking the long journey to Mount Paozu, Puck and Goku actually have fun and get along with each other. After encountering obstacles along the way, such as a pack of wolves and a "nice" lady who turns out to be a witch, Goku and Puck finally make it to a long rope-and-wood bridge, which looks dangerously unstable. Puck crosses the bridge first with ease, telling Goku that it seems okay to cross it. Goku crosses the bridge nervously, and a gust of wind distracts him, which makes him stumble. Because Goku stumbled, along with the force of the wind, the bridge rocks back and forth, which was enough to break a rope. With one rope cut, the bridge becomes extremely unstable, and Puck had to rescue Goku before he falls. Puck struggles to save Goku, who is dangling on only one rope above a deep trench. Another rope is broken, and the bridge collapses, causing Puck to fall into the trench. Luckily, Goku was still dangling on half of the bridge, which is still attached to the other side of the trench. Goku climbs out, and with nothing to do to save Puck, continues his journey alone. After traveling another great distance, Goku runs into a purple pig like demon, with the ability to manipulate his forearms into weapons. A grizzly bear, thankful to Goku for helping her cub earlier, attacks the demon trying to distract it so Goku and the cub could escape. Goku becomes enraged, and transforms into a Super Saiyan. He easily dismisses the demon, and soon after passes out. When he comes to, he has no memory of the transformation. Goku arrives to the summit of Mount Paozu, where he finds the old house which Grandpa Son Gohan harbored his ancestor in. He goes inside the old, dusty house, and finds the four-star Dragon Ball in the same place Goku kept it when it was first seen in the first episode of Dragon Ball. Goku takes it and, thinking that you can have one ball to grant the wish, tries to summon Shenron. When nothing happens, Goku becomes aggravated and shouts at the Dragon Ball as if there is someone in there. Again, when nothing happens, Goku throws the ball away, and starts yelling, telling himself that he was foolish to believe such a fairy tale about the Dragon Balls. Apparently, the Dragon Ball rolled to the feet of Goku Jr.'s ancestor, Son Goku himself.

Goku explains to his descendant that he has to collect all seven to get his wish. Goku Jr. gets on his feet, wipes his tears, and turns to his ancestor, stunned to see him. He asks him who he is, and Goku explains that he is his "great-great-grandfather." Confused about how many "greats" that would be, he tells Goku Jr. that he could just call him "Grandpa Goku" in short. Goku explains to Goku Jr. that he is strong and brave, because of his lineage. Out of the blue, a helicopter descends upon the ancient lawn of Grandpa Gohan's property, and reveals that Pan and Puck are inside it. Goku Jr. becomes excited to see everyone alive and well, exclaiming that the Dragon Ball granted his wish. He turns to where Grandpa Goku stood, and is stunned to see that he is nowhere to be seen, but Goku Jr. could hear his voice. Grandpa Goku tells him that it was actually his bravery that restored his grandma's life, including Puck's.

In a final farewell, Grandpa Goku wishes Goku Jr. good luck. Goku Jr. boards the helicopter with newfound strength, courage, and bravery with the four-star Dragon Ball in his hand. The Dragon Ball will be a keepsake for Goku Jr. to remind him of Grandpa Goku, just like how Grandpa Goku kept the Dragon Ball as a keepsake of Grandpa Gohan.

Super Saiyan

A Super Saiyan (超サイヤ人, Sūpā Saiyajin), is a fictional legend in the Dragon Ball manga created by Akira Toriyama. The first character to transform into a Super Saiyan is the series' main protagonist Son Goku, in volume 27 of the 42 volume manga series, better known to general fans as Dragon Ball Z; named so after the anime adaptation of the manga series was split into two sub-series. The Super Saiyan also appears in a third, anime-only series called Dragon Ball GT. In the series, the Super Saiyan is a transformation that is only accessible to characters who possess heritage from the fictional race called the Saiyans. The effects of the transformation results in greatly enhanced physical abilities.

The first transformation to Super Saiyan occurs involuntarily, when a Saiyan has reached his natural limit and is overcome with intense emotion. The ascended Super Saiyan levels, Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan 3 can only be reached due to training, but sometimes severe emotional stress can trigger Super Saiyan 2, as in Son Gohan's case. As the series continued, the status of the Super Saiyan as being "legendary" is quickly departed from due to more characters developing the ability to transform.

Appearance

Toriyama first drew the Super Saiyan as a lean warrior with upright golden hair and green eyes surrounded by a flame-like gold aura. As the series progresses and more forms are introduced, each form is slightly altered from the previous one; often possessing more upright hair and altered aura appearances. The two stages of the regular Super Saiyan are achieved between Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2. This produces an increase in strength and bulkier muscles. The two forms surpassing Super Saiyan introduced later in the series possess a much greater increment of power and longer hair. Blue electrical bolts also occasionally appear in the aura. Toei's anime adaptation of the Super Saiyan forms were slightly altered. The depiction of the different auras for the forms in the anime was usually less distinguishable than in the manga. Toei also added electrical bolts in the aura to the first-level Super Saiyan forms in the anime or occasionally left them out of the appropriate ones.

Concept

As the series continued and more powerful villains were introduced, the Super Saiyan concept was modified by Toriyama several times. As a result of these new villains, Toriyama at first had created "upgraded" forms of the original Super Saiyan, but then later created all new Super Saiyan forms. At the end of the manga, there were three forms or levels of the Super Saiyan, with two intermediate forms between the first and second form. As the anime was produced, Dragon Ball's animation company Toei created more forms, such as a pre-Super Saiyan form called Giji Super Saiyan, and an alternate genetically exclusive form called the Legendary Super Saiyan. Later in Dragon Ball Z's spin-off sequel Dragon Ball GT, Toei created Super Saiyan 4. Dragon Ball GT was cancelled after only 64 episodes due to lack of popularity, and no more Super Saiyan forms were officially created by Toriyama or Toei.

Heritage and gender controversy

Toriyama ran into a problem with his Super Saiyan concept in the last manga volume, where the quarter Saiyan female named Pan is introduced as the granddaughter of Goku. Toriyama's Super Saiyan concept had become a staple concept in the Dragon Ball series, so Toriyama had received many questions about Pan's ability to become a Super Saiyan. Toriyama wrote that Pan's Saiyan heritage was too diluted in order for her to ascend to Super Saiyan, but later admitted that the only reason he made that rule was because he could not come up with a logical design for a female Super Saiyan because most of the characteristics associated with the Super Saiyan were characteristics typical of males, and not females. Toei ignored this heritage rule in their spin-off series Dragon Ball GT when they made distant Saiyan descendents Son Goku Jr. and Vegeta Jr. have the ability to transform into Super Saiyans, even though their Saiyan heritage was even more diluted than Pan's.

Naming scheme

When the ascended Super Saiyan forms were introduced in the series, Toriyama had never actually given them names. It wasn't until volume 40 that the ascended Super Saiyan forms were given names by Goku. Goku was facing an opponent named Majin Buu, and decided to show him the different Super Saiyan forms, as a result he came up with names for them. He showed Buu his regular form, then Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, and then as a climax, introduced Super Saiyan 3. When the stages of the first Super Saiyan form were introduced, several names were given by the characters, but no official names for the advanced grades were decided on in the series. It wasn't until the Daizenshuu was produced that the stages of the regular form of Super Saiyan were actually given names, such as Super Saiyan 1 Stage 2 and Super Saiyan 1 Stage 3.

Daizenshuu vs GT Perfect files

When referencing characters that can achieve the Super Saiyan forms, there are two official guides that are used for this. The first guide is a ten volume book series called the Daizenshuu, published by both Toriyama's manga team and Dragon Ball's animation company Toei. The Daizenshuu is referred to by many fans as the "Dragon Ball Encyclopedia", and generally used as the primary reference of the two series. The second series published was two books called the GT Perfect Files, created solely by Dragon Ball's animation company Toei. Several differences between the two guides cause debate in the fandom; on several occasions, the GT Perfect Files either labels or leaves out characters on lists of people who have achieved certain Super Saiyan forms. For example, The GT Perfect Files lists the character Gotenks as a character who achieved Super Saiyan 2, while the Daizenshuu does not (however, the seventh Daizenshuu notes that Gotenks is indeed capable of going Super Saiyan 2). Also in the GT Perfect Files, Vegeta is only listed as a Super Saiyan 2 while in his "Demon Prince" or Majin state, but it doesn't list him as a Super Saiyan 2 in his regular state despite him making usage of the form in both his battles against Buu and on occasion in GT.

Legend

This account of the Super Saiyan legend is based on the storyline presented in the manga series, being that the manga storyline is more consistent with the rest of the Dragon Ball timeline.

The legend of the Super Saiyan is first introduced by the Saiyan prince Vegeta during the second story arc of the series called the Frieza Saga.^[1] Even though a detailed description of the legend is stated in the Frieza Saga, an indirect reference was made to it earlier in the series in the previous story arc called the Saiyan Saga.^[2] The legend told the story of a Saiyan with unlimited power who had existed a millennium prior. Even though only one Super Saiyan is usually referenced in the legend, Vegeta in the series occasionally has made reference to more than one; however, it was never confirmed if more than one actually did exist. The assumption that modern Saiyans had was that any Saiyan becoming a Super Saiyan was an extremely rare event, and only being a possible transformation for the stronger individuals of the race.^[3] When a Saiyan achieved the state of Super Saiyan, it was said that his heart would be overcome by rage, which would result in a transformation, both physically and mentally. The Super Saiyan legend was known by many races, and was considered the strongest being in the galaxy.

Because the Super Saiyan transformation had not been demonstrated by any Saiyan in over a thousand years, most races that had heard the legend of the Super Saiyan dismissed it as simple mythology, even most Saiyans. This was until several Saiyans emerged that possessed physical potential that had rapidly evolved beyond their known natural limits. The galactic overlord Frieza also had dismissed it as simple legend until he witnessed a genetically weaker Saiyan defeat one of his elite warriors. As a result, Frieza realized that a Super Saiyan emerging was a possibility. Fearing the Saiyans, he destroyed the race and their planet.

However, some would survive and one of the survivors (Goku) would defeat Frieza by ascending to the legendary form. Goku and Vegeta procreate with humans later in the series to produce hybrids, and most of the hybrids inherited the potential to ascend to Super Saiyan in spite of their impure heritage.

It was originally stated that a Saiyan must be pure of heart to make the transformation,^[4] whether it be pure good or pure evil. It is unclear whether or not the legend stated that a single Super Saiyan would appear every thousand years, or simply if no Super Saiyans had emerged in over a thousand years. This is simply due to plotholes in the legend. However, a year after Goku transformed, another Super Saiyan appears^[5]. As a result, the legendary status of the Super Saiyan ceases due to several characters being able to use the form. In the written series, all the male characters with Saiyan heritage who existed after the Frieza Saga managed to achieve Super Saiyan, and some of the characters managed to achieve advanced Super Saiyan transformations, but later on Vegeta's brother Tarble was introduced in an anime special, this was the only male living Saiyan that did not reach Super Saiyan status.

Evolution in the manga series

Early concept

Super Saiyan (超サイヤ人, Sūpā Saiyajin^?) was introduced in volume 24 of the 42 volume manga series, in the character Vegeta's recounting of a legend about a super warrior from the Saiyan race. Vegeta suspected that Goku was a Super Saiyan due to his substantial increase in physical power in a short amount of time. During the events of volume 27, Goku is seen to transform into what he calls a Super Saiyan, confirming Vegeta's suspicions earlier in the series.

Goku uses his new power to defeat Frieza, the antagonist of the series at the time. Frieza had destroyed the Saiyans out of his fear of their growing power, and the idea of a possible "Super Saiyan". As a result of defeating Frieza, Goku avenges the Saiyan race, and the death of his best friend Krillin.

As the series continues, the Super Saiyan becomes a staple concept in Dragon Ball, being achieved by several other characters in the series, with the sons of Goku and Vegeta seeming to access the form much easier than their fathers at a young age. Details about the Super Saiyan are revealed such as its limits and weaknesses. Goku later contracts a virus that attacks his heart, and his Super Saiyan transformation is revealed to actually increase the virus's effects on his body. By this time, the character Vegeta had also achieved Super Saiyan, and it is his defeat as a Super Saiyan at the hands of the Androids that reveals the Super Saiyan had limits, despite its incredible power.

Super Saiyan (Supa Saiya-jin)

Advanced stages

Continuing with the story, Toriyama decided to introduce several advanced stages of the Super Saiyan. The character Vegeta is the first one to reveal a second stage of the Super Saiyan in battle, which he uses to battle the character Cell. However, due to Vegeta's arrogance, Cell is allowed to reach his perfect form and defeat Vegeta, revealing yet more limits. Vegeta's son from the future, Trunks, displays a further stage of Super Saiyan, however the stage's weaknesses such as bulky mass and a speed reduction lead to his defeat. These flaws are exploited by Goku later in the series, who decides that simply mastering the regular Super Saiyan is the most effective way to become stronger. As a result of this revelation, these advanced stages are not used beyond a few chapters in the series.

Goku and his first child Son Gohan later emerge from the Room of Spirit and Time, having mastered the Super Saiyan form. After witnessing Goku, Vegeta deduces that the training had made him stronger than both himself or Trunks after using the minimum amount of chi to maintain the form, allowing him and Gohan greater access to their chi reserves, and constantly being in the Super Saiyan state. The only main difference between it and a regular super saiyan is that they are not usually covered with a golden aura, and as such, their hair appears to be a pale blonde rather than golden. Despite his increased power in his mastered state of Super Saiyan, Goku was unable to defeat Cell. Gohan also battled Cell in his mastered form of Super Saiyan, but was also unable to defeat Cell with his current strength.

Ascended levels

Toriyama had introduced the possibility of Gohan becoming stronger than his father earlier in the series, when Gohan had unknowingly assisted his father in defeating the evil Saiyan Raditz, who was revealed to be Goku's older brother. Gohan had revealed a massive dormant power that emerged whenever he threw fits of rage. During their training to battle Cell, Goku trained Gohan to become a Super Saiyan, knowing that if he became a Super Saiyan, his dormant power would probably be a catalyst in the defeat of Cell. Gohan was able to achieve Super Saiyan and master it, due to his father's guidance and training. Although he had not realized it, he was already stronger than his father.

Gohan later fought Cell, where his dormant power revealed itself, transforming him into a Super Saiyan 2 ^[6]. Gohan easily defeated Cell with this new form of Super Saiyan. Goku and Vegeta later are revealed to achieve this form, however the form's limits are exploited by the villain Majin Buu, and as a result, Goku reveals an even stronger form of Super Saiyan^[7]. There are no more Super Saiyan forms revealed in the manga series, as Toriyama ended the series shortly after.

Super Saiyan 2 (超サイヤ人2 Sūpā Saiyajin Tsū)

Power further increases far beyond any of the previous forms. In terms of appearance, it is similar to the first form. However, the muscles become larger, although not by as much of a factor as an ascended Super Saiyan. The user's hair stands straighter with fewer bangs of hair hanging over the forehead, and also seems to increase in length slightly. A stern look on the user's face is also maintained. In this form, blue electrical arcs always appear (in the manga, but the anime only depicts them from time to time), and are more prominent when the user powers up. Besides the electricity, the aura also grows in size and becomes more fierce than most of the previous forms.

Super Saiyan 3 (超サイヤ人3 Sūpā Saiyajin Surī)

Power increases greatly from the previous form. In terms of appearance, it is differentiated from the previous form by the user's straight standing hair growing almost to waist-length, similar to the hairstyle that Raditz had, and the user's eyebrows retracting, revealing a more prominent brow ridge. The muscles also increase slightly in size from the previous form. Blue electrical arcs constantly surround the users body, unlike Super Saiyan 2, which may lack electricity in some anime episodes. The shape and size of the aura from Super Saiyan 2 is also retained.

Toei transformation variants

The following Super Saiyan forms only appeared in the anime series, and were created by Dragon Ball's animation company Toei in order to elaborate on and expand Toriyama's written Dragon Ball series.

False Super Saiyan

During the development of the Super Saiyan concept, Dragon Ball's animation company (Toei) produced a movie depicting Goku's first Super Saiyan transformation. However, the form was later called Giji Supa Saiya-jin,^[8] which depicted Goku with his regular black hair, but flowing, eyes lacking irises and the golden aura of the anime Super Saiyan coloring the body gold. Goku uses this form in his fight against Lord Slug in Dragon Ball Z movie 4 after he catches a punch from him and easily overpowers him, however, though his power was extremely great his rage soon started to fall due to surprise that Slug is a Namekian. This form is an example of a Saiyan on their way to becoming a true Super Saiyan.

Legendary Super Saiyan

The Legendary Super Saiyan (Densetsu no Sûpâ Saiyajin^[8]) first appeared in Dragon Ball Z movie 8 in the form of a Saiyan survivor named Broly. In this film, Toei created a Super Saiyan whose abilities exceeded all other Super Saiyans in the series; an attempt to create an idea that there was a superior form of Super Saiyan that would be considered the "Legendary" form. Broly was originally designed by Toriyama for the movie, and strongly resembled one of Toriyama's manga Super Saiyan forms called Super Saiyan Stage 3. Even though the two forms appear very similar, The Legendary Super Saiyan form does not have the same physical flaws of massive ki consumption and speed loss that Stage 3 does. This form has many advantages when compared to the other Super Saiyan forms, as it requires no ki consumption, gives the user phenomenal strength and speed, and constantly raises the user's power as long as they remain in the Legendary Super Saiyan form.^[9]

Super Saiyan 4

The Super Saiyan 4 (超サイヤ人4, Sūpā Saiyajin 4^?) is a form that exclusively appears in Toei's spin-off anime series Dragon Ball GT, and was not part of the original series. Even though Toriyama supervised the production for Dragon Ball GT, he did not design the characters or Super Saiyan 4. The Super Saiyan 4 was designed by Toei artist Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, and was designed to more closely resemble the Saiyan Ape form which appears early in the written series. As a result, the Super Saiyan 4 design does not resemble the original Super Saiyan design of golden-yellow hair and green eyes. While Toriyama did not design the Super Saiyan 4, he did draw a manga version of Goku as a Super Saiyan 4 for the Dragon Box, a massive media boxset containing all the Dragon Ball movies and episodes ever produced by Toei^[10].

Wanting to expand the Dragon Ball series, Toei created a new series called Dragon Ball GT. As new enemies emerged in the series, Goku searches for a way to ascend what he had originally thought was the last Super Saiyan form. As a result, he went through a process that enabled him to transform into a Super Saiyan 4. The Super Saiyan 4 form is the most advanced Super Saiyan transformation achieved in the anime series, and is widely believed to be only accessible to pure blooded Saiyans; this was discovered when the parasitic Tuffle Baby had infected Vegeta, and Baby Vegeta could not transform to this because Baby was not a Saiyan, making Vegeta's heritage impure.

The Super Saiyan 4 has several unusual characteristics like it only being possible for pure Saiyans to achieve the transformation. Odd visual characteristics can be observed with disappearing articles of clothing after transformation, and the instant aging of Goku from child to adult when he transforms into Super Saiyan 4. It should be noted that the aging can be explained by the form's power. Super Saiyan 4 is strong enough to overpower the red dragon's magic, reverting Goku to his proper age. When compared to the previous Super Saiyan forms, the Super Saiyan 4 also has an unusual appearance. The Super Saiyan 4 does not have yellow hair. Instead the Saiyan retains his original hair color, regrows a tail, and develops a shade of red "fur" that covers most of the body. Each Saiyan who can utilize the transformation has different tone of red fur and eye color from other Saiyans who can achieve the form. The Super Saiyan 4 form is much more powerful and faster than the previous Super Saiyan transformations. The only two Saiyans known to be able to complete this transformation in the Dragon Ball series are Goku and Vegeta. Their combined form, Gogeta, was also able to achieve Super Saiyan 4, though he was shown having red hair and brown fur.

Appearances in other media

After the success of Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama created a self-parody manga entitled Neko Majin Z, which features Goku and Vegeta, and introduced a new Saiyan named Onio, who also has the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan. In the series, the Super Saiyan transformation was altered slightly, so the aura of the regular Super Saiyan contains bolts of electricity. As part of his self parody, the main character Neko Majin actually has a transformation that is similar to the Super Saiyan, where he becomes "Super Neko Majin".^[11]

Due to Dragon Ball receiving such iconic status in the manga and anime world, gags referencing the ability to "turn" or "go" Super Saiyan are often used in other pop cultural media in Japan.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, Sonic and a few other characters have the ability to transform into a "Super" state, a form which closely resembles a Super Saiyan.

In the Nintendo 64 Game Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, Goemon obtains a power that allows him to transform into a more powerful version of himself complete with blond spiky hair closely resembling that of a Super Saiyan.

Dragon Ball GT

Produced by Toei Animation, Dragon Ball GT (ドラゴンボールGT(ジーティー), Doragon Bōru Jī Tī , G(rand) T(our)^[4]) premiered on Fuji TV on February 2, 1996, and ran until November 19, 1997.^[31] Unlike the first two series, it was not based on the original Dragon Ball manga.^[32] The series lasted 64 episodes.^[4] In Dragon Ball GT, Goku is turned back into a child by the Black Star Dragon Balls and is forced to travel across the universe to retrieve them.

Funimation Entertainment licensed the series for an English language Region 1 DVD release and broadcast in North America. Funimation's English dub of the series aired on Cartoon Network from November 2003 to January 2005. The television broadcast skipped the first 16 episodes of the series. Instead, Funimation created a composition episode entitled "A Grand Problem", which used scenes from the skipped episodes to summarize the story. The skipped episodes were later aired after the remaining episodes of the series had been broadcast.^[31] The dubbed episodes also aired in Canada on YTV, which divided the episodes into two seasons instead of sagas.^[33]^[34]

With the ending of Dragon Ball, Toei Animation quickly released a second anime television series, Dragon Ball Z (ドラゴンボールZ(ゼット), Doragon Bōru Zetto, commonly abbreviated DBZ). Picking up where the first left off, Dragon Ball Z is adapted from the final twenty-six volumes of the manga series. It premiered in Japan on Fuji Television on April 26, 1989, taking over its predecessor's time slot, and ran for 291 episodes until its conclusion on January 31, 1996.^[4]^[28]

Following the canceled dub of Dragon Ball, Funimation licensed Dragon Ball Z for an English language release in North America. For the dubbing of the series, the Ocean Group was contracted to produce an English dub track. Like the original dub of Dragon Ball, the Ocean Group's dub of Dragon Ball Z was heavily edited for content, reducing the first 67 episodes into 53. The dubbed episodes of the first saga premiered in the United States on Fox in September 1996 and ended in May 1997. The second saga premiered on the The WB in September 1997, though it was eventually canceled in May 1998, once again due to low ratings. Three months later, the dub began airing on Cartoon Network as part of the channel's new Toonami programming block. Soon after, Funimation continued dubbing the series from where the cancelled dub left off, now using its own in-house voice actors, a new musical score, and less editing. The new dub of Dragon Ball Z ran on Cartoon Network from September 1999 to April 2003. In August 2004, Geneon Entertainment lost its licensing rights to the old Ocean Group dubbed episodes of Dragon Ball Z, allowing Funimation to re-dub the first 67 episodes, restore the removed content and replace the old dubbing with its in-house voice cast. These re-dubbed episodes aired on Cartoon Network throughout the summer of 2005. The Funimation dubbed episodes also aired in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland.^[29]^[30]

In the United Kingdom, the Funimation dub of episodes 107 through the final episode were replaced with a new dubbed version. This version used a dub language track produced by Blue Water and dubbed by the Ocean Group.

Dragon Ball

Due to the high popularity of the Dragon Ball manga, Toei Animation produced two anime television series based on the manga chapters, and a third based on the series characters. The first series, also titled Dragon Ball, premiered in Japan on Fuji Television on February 26, 1986 and ran until April 12, 1989.^[4]^[23] Spanning 153 episodes, it covered the first 16 volumes of the 42 volume manga series.^[23]

Harmony Gold USA licensed the series for an English language release in North America in the late 1980s. In their voice dub of the series, Harmony renamed almost all of the characters, with some names appearing very odd, such as the central character Goku being renamed "Zero" and the character Korin's name changed to "Whiskers the Wonder Cat". This dub version was quickly canceled.^{[citation needed]}

In 1995, Funimation Entertainment acquired the license for the series for broadcast and home video distribution in North America. Funimation contracted with BLT Productions to create an English voice track for the series, and the dubbed episodes were edited for content.^[24] Thirteen episodes aired in syndication before Funimation canceled the project due to low ratings, switching to working on the second anime series Dragon Ball Z.^[4] In March 2001, Funimation announced the return of Dragon Ball to American television, featuring a new English audio track produced in house and with less editing.^[24]^[25] The redubbed episodes aired on Cartoon Network from August 2001^[26] to December 2003. Funimation also broadcast the series on Colours TV and their own FUNimation Channel starting in 2006.^[27] Funimation began releasing the uncut episodes to Region 1 DVD box sets in March 18, 2003. Each box set, spanning an entire saga of the series, included the English dub track and the original Japanese audio track with optional English subtitles. These sets were released in Australia the following year. They were eventually discontinued and the series was re-released in 2008 as two box sets, the first containing 12 discs and the second containing 10 discs.

In 2003, a new dub, produced by Blue Water Studios, was created and began to air in the United Kingdom and Canada. It used different episode titles and voice actors versus the Funimation version.^[23]

The film opens with the introduction showing the death of Dr. Gero at the hands of the Androids 17 and 18, and also revealing that Gero is still around in the form of an underground computer, still working on three new Androids.

The real film now opens with the completion of Androids 14 and 15, who attack Goku while he is shopping with Chi-Chi and Gohan. Not wanting to destroy the city they're in, Goku and Future Trunks, who had arrived just then, leave for an uninhabited Arctic area. The fight seems even until Android 13 shows up - at least until Vegeta and Piccolo arrive. At that point of time, both Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks ascend to their Super Saiyan forms and 14 and 15 are destroyed by Trunks and Vegeta, respectively. Just when the fight seems won, 13 shows off his "Super" form by absorbing two components of the two fallen Androids, transforming into a blue behemoth and vastly increasing his power, changing the battle's outcome yet again. Despite all their efforts, Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo and Trunks are subsequently beaten by the powerful android. But then Goku prepares his Spirit Bomb, and, after transforming into a Super Saiyan, he absorbs its energy into his body (Krillin remarks that Goku's ability to transform shows that he retains his pure heart in Super Saiyan form) and destroys the Android menace. As 13, 14, and 15 are ultimately destroyed, Dr. Gero's computer shuts down for good, while still shouting the words "Goku must die!".

The film closes Goku and his friends healing in the hospital, but Piccolo and Vegeta, in isolation, are sitting back-to-back on a small chunk of ice in the sea.

Dragon Ball Z : Return Of Cooler

A few years prior, the tyrant Frieza destroyed the Planet Namek during his battle with the newly transformed Super Saiyan Goku. The peaceful Namekians found themselves without a home for months. Eventually they had a new planet created for them with the help of the Dragon Balls. For three years or so they lived in peace on their new planet. One day however, a strange metal planet began to absorb New Namek within itself. The star buried its way and wrapped around the planet, absorbing its energy. Dende, who is now the Earth's guardian, senses the plight of his people and calls Goku to ask for help.

Goku, Gohan, Krillin, Piccolo, Oolong, Yajirobe and Master Roshi arrive and encounter an army of strange, large, silent robots. We learn that Cooler, Frieza's older brother, that Goku was thought to have killed a few years earlier, is the one who deployed the robots on the planet to enslave the Namekians, whom he plans to use as biological fuel for the Big Gete Star. Goku then fights Cooler, while the other Z-Fighters battle Cooler's robots.

At first the Z-Warriors have trouble penetrating the robots' armor, but Piccolo instructs them to concentrate their energy to one point, and doing so allows them to destroy a few of the robots. However, there are far too many to handle and all the warriors, except Piccolo, are captured along with a village of Namekians. Piccolo is left behind, and destroys all the robots. He then makes his way to rescue those who were captured. Throughout the battle, Goku is distracted by a familiar face - that of Cooler, who he was sure had perished years ago. Goku battles Cooler, but it is apparent that Goku is no match for Cooler's new metallic form which gives him the ability to regenerate himself. Cooler also reveals his ability to use the Instantaneous Movement technique, which Goku also uses. Goku continues to struggle even after becoming a Super Saiyan. Cooler reveals that the Big Gete Star constantly monitors his body, and fixes any flaws that may occur, in this case Cooler's arm being torn off by Goku.

Just before Goku is choked to death by Cooler, Vegeta, who had arrived in a separate pod, shows up just in time to help Goku. The two Super Saiyans attack Cooler and they soon are able to kill him. However, the Big Gete Star once again corrects a flaw in Cooler's design. In this case the flaw was having only one body. So, the computer gave Cooler one-thousand bodies. Outnumbered and exhausted, Goku and Vegeta are captured and transported to the Big Gete Star's core to be used as energy. As Cooler is leeching their Saiyan strength via strange wires, Goku and Vegeta regain consciousness and release all their Super Saiyan energy to the wires, overloading the system. They then blast the true Cooler with the last of their energy, causing his ultimate demise. Meanwhile, Piccolo arrives in the Big Gete Star, and meets up with a clone of Cooler, which explodes. Eventually, all the other clones of Cooler, and every other robot, in the Big Gete Star explode. Piccolo and the rest escape before the Big Gete Star explodes in New Namek's orbit.

Goku and Vegeta fall from the sky near the rest of the Z Fighters, and everyone rejoices. They then realize that Vegeta is nowhere to be found, and Goku looks up at the sky. Vegeta is shown flying in space in his spacepod with the last remaining chip of the Big Gete Star in his hands. He then crushes it, ensuring that Cooler will never return again

Dragon Ball Z : Cooler's Revenge

In this movie, Frieza's older brother Cooler is introduced. It begins with a flashback to when Frieza destroyed the Saiyan home world, Planet Vegeta. Cooler's ship soon picks up Goku's space pod on the radar. Goku's ship is shown to be heading towards Earth, but Cooler's henchmen believe it is an escape. Cooler lets the ship go, believing it to be no threat. More than twenty years later, Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan and defeats Frieza on Planet Namek. Showing no compassion towards his brother, Cooler takes his Armored Squadron - Doure, Naiz, and Salza to Earth. He plans to kill Goku in order to reclaim his family's honor. His forces ambush Goku and his friends on a camping trip, and Goku is wounded when he takes a blast from Cooler that was intended for Gohan.

After Krillin sets up a shelter in a cave with Goku, Gohan flies off to obtain Senzu beans from Korin. After obtaining the beans, he is ambushed by Cooler's henchmen, but is saved by Piccolo. Piccolo dispatches Doure and Naiz, and takes on Salza, easily gaining the upper hand. During the battle, Cooler arrives and catches Piccolo off-guard with a powerful energy beam, which impales him through the chest but does not kill him. Cooler then sends Salza after Gohan as he continues to blast Piccolo. Gohan gets to the cave with the Senzu beans, but they are destroyed by Salza. However, he heals Goku with a spare bean Yajirobe gave him earlier. After Krillin and Gohan are beaten down by Salza, Goku appears fully healed. Cooler shows up, holding onto an unconscious Piccolo. He then blasts his body with an unexpected attack as Goku watches in horror. Goku blasts Salza into the distance, and begins to fight Cooler.

After Goku proves to be a worthy opponent, Cooler tells of his history with Frieza. He then reveals his final transformation, and pummels Goku around effortlessly, despite Goku using the Kamehameha and Kaio-ken techniques numerous times. Cooler then proceeds to destroy the landscape. However, after seeing a bird die from wounds inflicted by damage caused during the struggle, Goku thinks back on his friends and family, how they all would be killed if he let Cooler kill him. He then picks up the dead bird, letting out a yell so powerful it cracks solid stone. Goku then transforms into his Super Saiyan form, and gives enough of his energy to revive the bird. Cooler then finds himself, like Frieza was, grossly outclassed. After attempting to punch and blast the Super Saiyan with no effect, Cooler summons a trump card when he powers up an enormous ball of energy. Cooler launches the attack with hopes to destroy Goku and the Earth along with him. After a stint of struggling, Goku eventually manages to send it back with the Kamehameha, forcing Cooler off the Earth, towards the sun. Cooler thinks about destroying the sun, which would end life on Earth, until he realizes that he himself is headed into the sun itself. As Cooler curses Goku, he suddenly realizes that Goku is the Saiyan he let escape. His body is then seemingly disintegrated by the sun.

Goku, drained after his battle, is found by Krillin and Gohan. They are looking for Piccolo when Salza reappears, and prepares to kill them all. However, before he can attack, he is killed by Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon from a distance. Gohan looks around for Piccolo, and the movie ends with Piccolo gazing skyward.

Dragon Ball Z : Lord Slug

Lord Slug is one of the legendary Super Namekians. A Namekian that has been traveling through space for a number of years after being banished from his home world for misusing his powers. Along with his crew of vicious fighters, he travels from planet to planet wreaking chaos as he goes. An asteroid alert is wreaking havoc all over the planet as it is going to destroy the entire Earth. Goku and Krillin go to deflect the asteroid off course so it doesn't hit Earth, but though they succeed, a spaceship lands on Earth. Slug's men attempt to carry out the same destruction there that they had at a countless number of other planets. The way they dominate a planet is to literally change its atmosphere, freezing the planet. By conforming it to their liking, they make it more suitable for themselves and almost unlivable for any other people, including the native occupants of the planet. Slug's men manage to gather the Dragon Balls knowing of their power because of his Namekian heritage and uses them to restore his youth and health; like King Piccolo before him, being fully restored gave him a far greater power.

Goku, Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo square off against Slug's team and manage to defeat them all. The final battle against Slug is left in the hands of Goku. The battle is not going well for Goku, who is repeatedly beaten down by Slug, until he catches a punch from Slug and his anger causes him to power up into what King Kai interprets as a Super Saiyan(only with blach hair like a super saiyan 0.5). Goku then angrily attacked Slug in a fierce battle and thanks to his increased strength, is able to deal several effective blows to the Super Namekian. However, Goku is not able to control this power for long and regresses back to his normal form, though he does manage to break Slug's arm. Despite this, Slug is able to tear off his broken arm and grow back a new one, revealing his Namekian heritage to Goku. He then transforms into a giant, more powerful version of himself (something Piccolo was able to do once also) and proceeds to completely annihilate Goku until Piccolo steps in. He becomes caught by Slug's giant hands and cannot escape. Piccolo then rips off his own ears and tells Gohan to whistle in order to use Slug's ultra sensitive hearing against him. Gohan does as told and whistles, causing Slug great pain.

Exploiting a weakness of all Namekians; their extremely sensitive hearing, Gohan's whistling is able to bring Slug to his knees (Piccolo had earlier torn off his ears, so he isn't harmed by this strategy). Piccolo then transfers all of his power to Goku, rejuvenating him. Goku then uses the Kaio-ken attack and succeeds in knocking down the giant Slug. Goku then flies up into the sky to destroy the weather changing generator and absorbs energy from the sun to form a Spirit Bomb. Slug attempts to stop him, but Goku launches the Spirit Bomb and it hits Slug, sending him into the generator, destroying them both. The final scene involves Master Roshi waking up from his nap which he started before the aliens landed and he wishes that something interesting would happen.

Dragon Ball Z : Tree Of Might

In the movie, the Z Fighters face a new threat that starts with the burning of a forest, in which Gohan and Krillin rescue the forest animals and a small dragon named Icarus. Although they are able to restore the forest to its normal state with the Dragon Balls, Icarus doesn't return and stays with Gohan, much to Chi-Chi's fury. Goku then shows a nearby cave to let Gohan keep the dragon with him. Later, the Earth is visited by an unfriendly group of aliens under the leadership of a Saiyan. Upon arriving, they plant a seed which grows the Tree of Might, a plant that sucks the life of the planet on which it was planted and leaves it a desert. At King Kai's request, Goku, Krillin, Yamcha, Tien and Chiaotzu investigate and try to destroy the Tree, but are unsuccessful. They are then confronted by the aliens whilst their leader watches from inside the spaceship. Eventually, Krillin, Yamcha, Tien and Chiaotzu are defeated by the aliens, with only Goku remaining as the one who can hold his own against them.

During the ensuing battle, Chiaotzu is rescued by Gohan, who had just arrived, and demonstrates his incredible fighting skills by easily taking out the two identical aliens. He is then encountered by the aliens' leader Turles, a Saiyan who bears a striking resemblance to Goku. Turles gives Gohan a choice to either join him or die. Gohan refuses to join Turles, and is saved in time thanks to the arrival of Piccolo. However, Turles defeats the both of them and creates an artificial moon, turning Gohan into an Oozaru and sets him on Goku, who is almost crushed to death in Gohan's hand until Icarus arrives and calms Gohan down. But when Turles attacks Icarus, Gohan is angered and turns on Turles, who fires an attack at Gohan. Before the attack can make contact, Goku eventually manages to cut his son's tail off and restore him to normal. Cradling the little one in his arms, Goku threatens Turles. Angry and impressed at the same time, Turles sets his henchmen on Goku, who uses the Kaio-ken attack and makes quick work of them while Piccolo unsuccessfully fights Turles again. Goku and Turles then fight, with Goku having the upper hand, until Turles pushes his power further by eating a fruit from the Tree of Might. With his new power, Turles dominates Goku and beats him to the point that he is no longer able to fight, even with the use of the Kaio-ken x10.

Slowly recovering while Turles is distracted by the rest of the Z-Fighters, whom he brutally dispatches, Goku decides to use his Spirit Bomb. Despite gaining energy from the living, he is not able to attack Turles as he counterattacks with a blast of his own, neutralizing Goku's Spirit Bomb. Unable to gather more energy from living beings, Goku decides to steal energy from inside the Tree of Might itself. Eventually successful in creating the Spirit Bomb, Goku sees his opportunity, and fires it straight into Turles, who is carried up the trunk of the Tree of Might and destroyed along with the Tree when the Spirit Bomb explodes. With the terror now over, the Z-Fighters return to their normal lives once again, and that is the end of this long battle.

Dragon Ball Z : The World's Strongest

The movie begins when Gohan and Oolong search for the Dragon Balls that have all been gathered in the frozen Tsumisumbri Mountains, but before they reach them, Shenron is summoned by Dr. Kochin who wishes that his mentor, Dr. Wheelo, to be released from his icy prison. Gohan and Oolong are then attacked by Kochin's Biomen, but are saved by Piccolo, who easily defeats all of them and destroys one with a mouth beam. As Gohan and Oolong escape however, Piccolo is captured by Dr. Kochin's three Bio-Warriors. Later, Master Roshi is faced by Dr. Kochin's Biomen and defeats them all in battle, but the Biomen kidnap Master Roshi and Bulma, thinking that Roshi is the world's strongest and a suitable body for Dr. Wheelo, whose own body was destroyed, leaving him only as a brain. Roshi is tested by Dr. Kochin's three Bio Warriors, and proves to be worthy, but is ultimately defeated. Bulma inadvertedly reveals that Goku is the strongest, just as the Earth's hero approaches the fortress on the Nimbus Cloud to save his friends.

As soon as Goku arrives, he is attacked by the Bio Warrior Misokattsun, who has a large rubber body. After knocking him down, Goku races inside the fortress and is attacked by large flying balls with spikes. After dodging several of them, Goku fires rapid energy blasts and destroys all of the spikes. Misokattsun then attacks again, but Goku uses the Kaio-ken attack and flies right through the Bio-Warrior, deflating him. On the higher level, Goku is attacked by Kishime and Ebifurya, and holds his own for a while, but is then shocked by Kishime's electric rods and frozen solid by Ebifurya's icy attack. Gohan and Krillin then arrive to help, but are soon shocked and frozen also. However, Goku uses the Kaio-ken again, freeing him from his icy prison, and he easily takes out the two Bio-Warriors.

They then arrive at Dr. Wheelo's lab where Bulma is being held, but run into Piccolo, who has been brainwashed. Goku and Piccolo then fight each other, but Gohan's anger causes the mind-controlling device on Piccolo to break. Dr. Kochin tries to shoot Krillin and Bulma with his machine gun-arm, but is beaten by Roshi. Dr. Wheelo then breaks out of the wall, revealing his brain to be inside a huge robot and destroying Kochin in the process, revealing him to be a robot as well. Goku, Gohan, Krillin, Piccolo, and Roshi then fight Dr. Wheelo together, but are unable to win. Goku refuses to give up however, and he decides then to attack Dr. Wheelo with the Kaio-ken x3. He manages to break Dr. Wheelo's right arm off and is about to finish him off with the Kamehameha blast when Dr. Wheelo counters it with a blast of his own. Right as Dr. Wheelo is about to win the beam struggle however, Goku uses the Kaio-ken x4. He then overpowers Dr. Wheelo and shoots him through his laboratory's ceiling, into space.

All is thought to be over but Dr. Wheelo is still alive and well. Goku senses this and decides the only way to kill Dr. Wheelo is to form a Spirit Bomb. Dr. Wheelo then begins to rain blasts of energy down from space from his claw, which ends up hitting Goku while he is making his Spirit Bomb. This sends Gohan into a rage, and he starts to fly up into the atmosphere to attack Dr. Wheelo, who is already on his way down to earth. Piccolo arrives to assist Gohan, as does Krillin. Gohan and Piccolo stop Dr. Wheelo's descent while Krillin attempts to attack him to no avail. Piccolo attacks Dr. Wheelo with a mouth beam, severely cracking his visor. Back on Earth, Goku is still alive and he launches the Spirit Bomb up into space. Dr. Wheelo out of anger then attempts to destroy the entire planet with the energy built up in his laboratory's power core. He fires off a massive red laser from his entire body down to earth, but Goku's Spirit Bomb collides with the laser, bursting through it, and it hits Dr. Wheelo. He is sent spiraling off into space on a jagged wave of energy where he explodes multiple times until he is no more. In the aftermath of the battle, Piccolo responds to Goku and the others' celebration by saying Gohan deserved all the credit, and the movie ends with everyone laughing (except Piccolo) at how Dr. Wheelo thought that Master Roshi was the strongest man in the world.

Dragon Ball Z : Bio Broly

The film opens with a group of strangely colored humanoids emerging from tanks in a laboratory. The scientists responsible for these creations are congratulated by their employer, Mr. Jaguar, who plans to make these "Bio-Humans" into the strongest fighters on Earth. Despite warnings from his cousin, Men-Men, Jaguar laughs maniacally as one of his not-yet-finished bio-humans wags his furry tail in his tank.

As Mr. Satan (Hercule) hasn't yet paid Android 18 the prize money she demanded for letting him beat her in the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament, she begins smashing Mr. Satan's mansion up, particularly his undeserved prizes from the tournament. Mr. Satan, cowering, tries to tell 18 that he hasn't gotten the money yet, but she doesn't believe him, and continues to ransack his home. His screams of fright are heard by Krillin, Marron, Trunks, and Goten, who are waiting for 18.

Mr. Satan is visited by Men-Men, who claims to be the cousin of Mr. Satan's old martial arts rival, Jaguar. It seems that Jaguar is blackmailing Hercule into visiting his laboratory island to fight his bio-fighters. Hercule agrees, and departs with Men-Men, followed by 18, Trunks, and Goten; 18 to ensure that Mr. Satan does not cheat her again, and Trunks and Goten out of excitement over the Bio-Warriors.

Upon arriving, Mr. Satan is coldly greeted by Jaguar, who sets up a tournament for him to fight the bio-fighters, but when they demonstrate their incredible fighting abilities, they are more than which Mr. Satan can handle, Goten, Trunks, and 18 intervene. Goten and Trunks are then confronted by a familiar face: The Priest from Natade Village whom they met in the previous movie.

Enraged, Jaguar reveals his greatest weapon: a Super Bio-Fighter. But when Trunks and Goten see the Super Bio-Fighter, they recognize him as none other than the Legendary Super Saiyan himself, Broly. They confront the priest, who tells them that he sold Broly's frozen blood to Jaguar, and that the Super Bio-Fighter is Broly's clone. Trunks and Goten prepare to destroy Broly before he can be revived, but seeing Goten has already awakened Broly's Saiyan instincts and his vendetta against Goku. He breaks out of stasis, only to be drenched in the bio-liquid and turns into a horribly deformed, slime covered bio-mutant, giving him the name Bio-Broly.

Jaguar commands Bio-Broly to attack Mr. Satan, but 18 intervenes at the last minute, only to get pounded by the Bio-Saiyan. Just before Bio-Broly can kill Hercule, Trunks intervenes and save him in time. They then attack Bio-Broly head-on, and prove to be an equal match for the Bio-Saiyan, until Goten abandons the battle to save trapped scientists from the flooding of a dangerous bio-liquid which absorbs anything with a different genetic structure to its own and grows stronger.

As Bio-Broly pounds Trunks around, 18 recovers and tries to stop him, but she too is beaten. Just before Bio-Broly can kill her, Krillin shows up in time and rescues 18, but Bio-Broly finds them both and almost kills them. Goten and Trunks then fight Bio-Broly again, but they get seriously pounded, and Bio-Broly almost kills Goten until Trunks devises a way to get rid of the menace.

Trunks manages to lure Bio-Broly into a corner, where he blasts the bio-liquid tanks, causing them to shower on Bio-Broly and supposedly melt him. Unfortunately, this only makes the bio-liquid more powerful and his power rises, and it soon starts to flood the entire island, and possibly the whole planet. Goten, Trunks, Krillin and 18 manage to get as many people as they can out of the lab, including the reluctant Jaguar and Men-Men, who want to die shamefully along with their deadly creations, but Trunks rescues them anyway, and Mr. Satan manages to escape by jumping into the water.

To everyone's surprise, the bio-liquid seems to be solidifying by touching the sea water, so Trunks, Goten, and Krillin use a triple Kamehameha Wave to blast the water by the island so high that the entire island is flooded with sea water, which solidifies all the bio-liquid. Unfortunately, the celebrations are cut short when Bio-Broly emerges from the sea as a giant. However, as fast as Bio-Broly emerges, he then turns to stone, due to having been drenched in sea water. Seeing their chance, Goten and Trunks blast the gigantic Bio-Broly statue into smithereens, ridding the universe of Broly for good.

Mr. Satan emerges from the sea water, calling for help. Laughing, 18 says that she will help him if he promises to pay her 100,000,000 zeni. Fuming, Mr. Satan swims off.

In the Other World, Goku is informed that Broly (the original) is causing trouble in Hell. Along with Pikkon, Goku is sent to stop Broly but instead he gives it a while longer as he continues to eat.

Dragon Ball Z : Broly The Legendary Super Saiyan

This story begins at a picnic, during a painful singing session courtesy of Krillin, when a massive ship arrives. Out comes Paragus, one of the few surviving Saiyans. He invites Vegeta to rule a new Planet Vegeta. Vegeta initially refuses until Paragus appeals to Vegeta's ego by asking him to kill the Legendary Super Saiyan that has completely destroyed the South Galaxy.

Gohan, Trunks, Krillin, Master Roshi and Oolong depart with Vegeta on Paragus' spaceship (with Trunks's intention being to try and stop his father from doing something foolish).

Meanwhile, Goku is at a school interview with Chi-Chi, who is trying to get Gohan accepted into the school. Goku is reached telepathically by King Kai during the interview, and immediately teleports to him upon hearing the South Galaxy has been destroyed, leaving the school staff confused and Chi-Chi very annoyed. King Kai then tells Goku that a Super Saiyan is destroying planets in the South Galaxy and asks Goku to step in and stop him.

At first the group believes that Paragus has good intentions and honestly wants to create a new Planet Vegeta (Though Future Trunks is suspicious about the whole ordeal). Later on it is revealed that the planet is on a collision course with a large comet, "Comet Camori". Soon after Gohan, Trunks, Krillin, Roshi, Oolong, and Vegeta arrive, a report comes in that the Legendary Super Saiyan is attacking another planet. Vegeta takes Paragus's son, Broly, and investigates. Meanwhile, Goku teleports to a planet already ravaged by the Legendary Super Saiyan, and Goku feels the echoes of the enormous ki that was present. Goku, having not seen the Legendary Super Saiyan, teleports to the new Planet Vegeta.

While Vegeta and Broly are investigating the attack, Gohan, Trunks and Krillin go out to investigate the new Planet Vegeta. They find a slave colony strip mining the planet to send energy to the palace. Gohan, Trunks and Krillin quickly break up the slave labor going on at the colony. This is also when Goku arrives on the planet to be accidentally punched by Krillin. Paragus also first meets Goku during this scene, and immediately identifies him as Bardock's son.

The first time that Broly sees Goku, he immediately recognizes him and gets extremely infuriated. Broly and Goku begin powering up in a standoff, until Paragus brings him back under control by using a mind-control device put on him when he was a teenager. Unfortunately for Paragus, Broly later finds a way to bypass the mind-control which the device has over him.

During this scene we are told, by Paragus, that Goku and Broly were born on the same day. Broly was born with an extreme fighting power of 10,000 (which is unusual since not even most adult Saiyans have power levels that high), while Goku had a much weaker power-level of 2. It is said that Goku cried constantly, keeping Broly awake for days on end. From then on, Broly would constantly hold a grudge against Goku. During his teen years, Broly's mental and emotional instability, coupled with his great power, made him highly dangerous. After an incident that cost Paragus his left eye, Broly is fitted with a device meant to keep his power in check, and Paragus, who barely survived the ordeal, realized that, with Broly's power under his control, he could rule the universe.

Meanwhile, Broly attacks Goku during the night as a restrained Super Saiyan. Despite Goku's best efforts, none of his attacks have any effect on Broly, and he is forced to run. Towards the end of the fight, Paragas reasserts control over Broly and forces him to stop attacking Goku. He barely manages to do so, foreshadowing things to come. At this point, Goku realizes that Broly is the Legendary Super Saiyan, recognizing the power he felt earlier as Broly's own.

Eventually Gohan, Trunks and Krillin bring the slaves they freed back to the palace, and they identify Broly as the one that attacked their planet. Paragus reveals that the planet is about to be hit by the comet, and that he in fact wants to reestablish Saiyan dominance across the universe, using the Earth as their new homeworld. Suddenly, an increasingly-agitated Broly goes after Goku shouting, "Kakarot!" repeatedly, suddenly transforming into a restrained Super Saiyan while he does so. Vegeta transforms into a Super Saiyan and attacks Broly, who is completely unfazed by (and seems oblivious to) the attack. Vegeta then attacks Broly with a Big Bang Attack but the blast, again, has no effect. Broly soon rages out of Paragus' control and, in a very intense transformation, becomes a monsterous behemoth of a Super Saiyan, his true and most powerful form. Vegeta, stunned by Broly's power, falls to the ground in shock, eyes wide with fear, realizing that Broly is the feared Legendary Super Saiyan.

Paragus reveals that Vegeta's father viewed the infant Broly as a threat, and ordered his execution. Paragus attempted to plead with him for his son's life, stating that the acquired data could be wrong and that Broly could grow up to be a great warrior and an asset to the royal family. King Vegeta stated that, while this was true, Broly could just as easily turn on them, and decided to let father and son die together; Paragus is hit with an energy blast, Broly is stabbed in the abdomen with a dagger, and both are thrown in a ditch. When Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta, Broly used his powers to surround himself and Paragus with a force field, allowing them to survive the explosion. From then on, Paragus plotted revenge; if not on King Vegeta himself, then his son.

Broly, raged beyond control, destroys the strip mines and the slaves' home planet. Broly goes after Goku and Gohan in a chase, destroying forests and slaves with a barrage of energy blasts. Goku, realizing that in his normal state he doesn't stand a chance, turns into a Super Saiyan. Gohan follows by transforming into his Super Saiyan form as well and then Trunks comes to their aid and also transforms into his Super Saiyan form. The battle gets intense, but remains completely one-sided, with Broly's monstrous strength proving too much for the Z fighters to handle. Goku tells Gohan to run, which he does, but Broly valiantly pursues him and, grabbing his head, throws him into a nearby building, from where he hangs by the cloth around his neck. The destructive Legendary Super Saiyan then single-handedly takes down both Goku and Trunks. Then Piccolo shows up after Broly punishes the warriors and saves Gohan from a would-be-fatal attack. He then hands everyone a senzu bean. Not long after, the four warriors then decide to gang up on a patient Broly, who stands on a thin cliff. In only a matter of minutes, all four of them are pummeled by Broly again. Goku and Piccolo land a few ineffectual punches on him, and Gohan and Trunks' Masenkos have absolutely no effect. Piccolo attempts to persuade Vegeta to fight. In shock, he refuses, and disgusted, Piccolo drops him off the edge of the cliff, telling him to "let the real men fight." Meanwhile, Goku is fighting ceaslessly just to stay alive. Vegeta, rediscovering his inner Saiyan pride, transforms into his Super Saiyan form once again, and joins the fight against Broly. His efforts, however, are futile as he is rendered unconscious within mere seconds. Broly later finds his father, Paragus, attempting to flee inside a Saiyan space pod, leaving his son to die in the explosion of the planet. Broly picks up the pod in turn and crushes it, suffocating Paragus, and throws it directly at the comet where Paragus dies.

Piccolo then tells everyone to channel their powers to Goku so he can defeat Broly. One by one they comply, except Vegeta, who refuses to help a lower-ranking Saiyan due to his pride. While gathering energy, Goku suffers at the hands of Broly; he is blown across the landscape by energy blasts and very powerful punches, and then repeatedly jumped on, causing him to cough up blood. Finally, on the brink of death, Goku forcefully tells Vegeta to help him. Vegeta reluctantly does so, and with the combined power of the Z-Warriors, Goku is finally able to subdue - not defeat - Broly. Everyone then escapes from the planet via a Caspule Corp. ship which Piccolo used to reach them. Goku and Gohan teleport home, only to be confronted by an angry Chi-Chi, who is still annoyed at Goku for leaving during the interview and then passes out (ironically, right after Goku told her "my Hobbies are reading and sports", the exact same thing Chi-Chi told Goku to say at the interview).

Dragon Ball Z : Broly Second Coming

The film opens with a Saiyan Space pod flying through space and crash-landing on Earth. The crash causes a small crater to appear, and a Super Saiyan crawls out: Broly, the Legendary Super Saiyan. As the weather gets colder, Broly's power decreases, and he reverts back from his Legendary Super Saiyan form to his mastered Super Saiyan form, until he finally loses consciousness and turns back into his normal form. Water pours over, and freezes, trapping the sleeping Broly and preserving him.

Seven years later, Goku is deceased having sacrificed his life to save the Earth and his second son, Goten, as well as Trunks and Videl are looking for the Dragonballs because Videl wants to see Shenron. During their search, they find that there is a local village called Nataday that is ruled by a priest, who always seems to think that everything in the world is a curse. The residents of Nataday village claim that they are usually terrorized by a monster, and their only source of help is the priest's preaching and annual human sacrifices.

Goten, Trunks and Videl decide to make a plan to rid Natady Village of the monster by leaving food for it and hiding in a chest next to it. However, Trunks and Goten's hunger gets the better of them and Trunks sneaks an apple, but Videl doesn't allow Goten to do so, eventually slapping him across the face and causing him to cry a lot. Goten moans and cries (actually pretending) while Videl attempts to apologize, until she finally gives in and hands him a piece of bread.

Then, the monster appears, and turns out to be a dinosaur. After playing around with the dinosaur, Goten and Trunks kill it, and share the meat with Videl and the villagers. The priest is then rejected by the villagers for not being a competent savior, and thrown out of the village. With Nataday village now a peaceful place to live, Goten, Trunks and Videl depart to continue their Dragonball hunt.

However, unknown to them, Goten's cries shatter a layer of ice, the same layer of ice which Broly is encased in. Broly awoke in the ice due to Goten's crying (As it reminded him of Goku's crying, which Broly hated Goku for) and shatters the ice, enraged and emerging as a mastered Super Saiyan.

Night time falls as Goten, Trunks and Videl fall asleep so they can continue their quest the next day to bring Shenron out. Early morning Videl is awakened by loud explosions in the distant and takes off flying to investigate the explosions by the nearby lake. Here, Videl is confronted by a huge, young man with white trousers, earrings, a red belt, no top, and blond hair: Broly in his mastered Super Saiyan form.

Videl confronts Broly, but soon proves to be no match for the Legendary Super Saiyan, who knocks her unconscious and into the lake with a single punch. Goten and Trunks arrive and attempt to convince him to stop, but when Broly sets his eyes on Goten, his rage comes to the surface, because he mistakes Goten for Goku, due to their similar looks and cries, as well as Broly's deteriorating mental state. Broly turns his attention to Goten and Trunks who then both proceed to transform into mastered Super Saiyans. Broly battles them both, pounding them seriously.

During the battle, Goten's eyes fall on the nearby last Dragonball, so Trunks tries to distract Broly by mooning and taunting him while Goten gets the Dragonball. Unfortunately, Goten tries to summon Shenron behind a waterfall so that Broly doesn't see him, and Shenron does not appear. Just as Broly is about to finish Goten and Trunks off, Gohan appears at the last minute and saves the two younger half-Saiyans.

With Trunks and Goten safe for now, Gohan lands and explains that Broly is the feared Legendary Super Saiyan, whom he battled alongside Goku and his friends seven years ago. To his surprise, Gohan finds out Videl is also with Goten and Trunks. Thinking now that Gohan is Goku, Broly calls out Kakarot! and charges towards Gohan. Gohan then begins to fight Broly head-on. Just then Videl reappears and Gohan and Broly take their battle to the skies. Broly then turns his sights on Goten, Trunks, and Videl who are standing on a cliff watching the battle below. Broly guides an energy ball that he throws towards the three below. Gohan, at the last second, appears in front of the others and using his power, tries to shield his brother and friends from the blast but to no avail. The blast seriously hurts the others and Gohan is the only one left standing to face Broly. Angry at this turn of events, Gohan powers up and transforms into his Super Saiyan form . Broly follows up by powering up to his Legendary Super Saiyan form. After a short completely one-sided fight, Gohan, now overpowered, is unable to find a way to beat Broly. Just then, Gohan sees his only chance to beat Broly. Gohan lures Broly into a pit of molten lava that Broly's energy ball made earlier. Broly is apparently caught and dragged into the molten lava. A weakened Gohan reverts from his Super Saiyan form and is rescued in time by Krillin, who is strangely dressed like Piccolo, before he could be caught in the lava himself. To everyone's shock, Broly re-appears before their eyes surrounded by an energy shield, and knocks Krillin out with one energy attack. Broly then proceeds to torture Gohan, with everyone too weak and exhausted to help.

Just as Broly is about to squeeze the life out of Gohan, Videl appears and intervenes by throwing a crystal at the huge Saiyan that distracts him for a moment. Seeing Videl pass out after throwing the crystal angers Gohan and kicks Broly in the stomach, freeing himself from Broly’s grip. Gohan transforms into his Super Saiyan form and attacks Broly with his Kamehameha, but Broly counter-attacks with a gigantic green energy ball powerful enough to destroy the galaxy, and blocks Gohan's attack. The Dragonballs fall out of Goten's bag and begin to glow. The glow awakens Goten, who was knocked unconscious from Broly's earlier blast and arrives next to his older brother. Goten also transforms into a Super Saiyan and fires his own Kamehameha to help Gohan. However, even with a combined Kamehameha, Broly still has the upper-hand and starts to push the huge green energy bomb forward by firing multiple ki shots at it. Goten, now afraid of losing, begins wishing Goku was there in his mind. The Dragonballs seem to hear Goten's wish and begin to shine and seemingly Shenron is summoned (the clouds and sky turn black but Shenron does not actually appear on screen). Shenron seems to grant Goten's wish, and Gohan and Goten surprisingly hear a familiar voice coming from the sky: their father, Goku's voice. Somehow, Goku appears from the dark sky and lands beside his two sons, transforms into Super Saiyan, and fires his own Kamehameha to assist while coaching them in the Kamehameha duel, which proves redundant as Broly just laughs and launches a small ki blast into the energy ball. Trunks, now awakened from the energy battle, sends one last ditch effort ki ball that he had been charging up at Broly and passes out. Trunks' energy ball creates a barrier between Broly and his giant energy blast. This keeps Broly from firing more ki blasts into the blast to help push it forward. Seeing that Broly is distracted Goku and his sons launch out all of their powers into the triple Kamehameha and it is able to breaks through the blast. Broly is then blasted into the sun and seemingly defeated.

After the smoke clears, the Dragonballs are gone, and so is Goku. With Broly now defeated, Gohan, Goten, Trunks, and Videl return home. The movie ends with Krillin still being stuck in the rock that he was blasted into and ends the movie by saying "Hey guys! Can someone help me up? I'm stuck. Seriously!!

Dragon Ball Z : Bojack Unbound

Bojack is the main villain of the movie. His goal is to conquer the universe and destroy all those that stand in his way. According to King Kai, he was sealed by all four Kais in a star, but when Goku teleported the devolved, ready to self-destruct Cell to King Kai's planet, killing him, the seal broke, allowing Bojack to be free to do his destruction upon the Earth.

Having another World Martial Arts Tournament funded by Mr. X.S. Cash for his son's birthday, Hercule invites everyone on Earth to a competition on Battle Island. Charging through the preliminaries with no trouble, Krillin, Piccolo, Trunks, Gohan and Dosqoi, an ordinary human, advance to the Semifinals. In the first round Gohan wins with ease. The second round between Trunks and Tien began. Tien gave the audience a "good show" by using his Tri-Beam Cannon, and the two took to the air after a quick warm-up. Tien powers up and Trunks transforms into a Super Saiyan. At Capsule Corp. Vegeta is seen watching the match on TV. Disgusted, he switches the TV off and lays back. Charging through a Destructo Disk, Trunks slams Tien into the water, giving Trunks the win. The third match between Krillin and Piccolo was brief. Clearly irritated by his opponent, Piccolo forfeits by leaving, giving Krillin the win. During all this Hercule is trying various ways to get off the island so he doesn't face any of the Z-Fighters, but all of them fail. Gohan, Trunks, Krillin and Dosqoi proceed to the finals and head to separate battle zones. Krillin is confronted by a mysterious woman named Zangya, who beats him flat while Dosqoi is killed by Bido.

Everyone soon begins to realize what's wrong as Trunks is challenged by Kogu and Gohan confronts Bujin. During this time, Hercule is in the rest room, thinking about how he got himself in this mess, but after looking at his belt he realizes that the people need him and, in an uncharacteristically brave mood he goes out and gets slammed into a pod and sent to the fighting. During his fight against Kogu, Trunks transforms into a Super Saiyan, shatters Kogu's sword and shoves his fist right through Kogu's chest, killing him. As he turns to leave, he is struck down in one blow by an unknown foe. Far away, Vegeta felt this power and knew something was up. Gohan continues his fight with Bujin until he is lead out to where Krillin and Trunks are. After inspecting his fallen friends, Bojack introduces himself and tells him his plans to rule the universe as his revenge. Yamcha and Tien turn up to fight but are defeated by Bujin, Bido and Zangya. Seeing his friends fallen, Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan and fights them while Bojack watches on in amusement. Gohan is beaten down and Bojack powers up an attack to finish him off, although it was deflected by Piccolo, who had come to Gohan's aid. Trunks comes back into action and they both challenge Bojack. After a period of fighting Trunks's sword appears; catching it as Vegeta enters the fight and transforms into a Super Saiyan, quickly setting on Bojack. During this, Trunks thinks that Vegeta would only ever fight when it meant him surpassing Goku's strength, and he realises that Vegeta has truly changed. While Vegeta and Bojack fight the rest fought against his last surviving henchman. During his fight against Vegeta, Bojack beats him down and transforms. Gohan rushes to Piccolo's aid, but Piccolo tells him to not worry about him and fight Bojack. Bojack challenges Gohan to a fight and beats him to a bloody pulp thanks to the aid of Bido and Zangya's Untrapped ropes, which drains Gohan's energy away, but is freed when Hercule's incoming pod distracts them all. Annoyed at this, Bojack powers up an attack and blasts Hercule's pod causing him to fall to the ground. Trying to save him, Gohan is struck down by Bojack's henchmen.

On Snake Way with King Kai, Goku can't watch any more and, using his Instant Transmission, teleports himself to the fight and punches Bojack before he can finish Gohan off. Surprised, Bojack falls to the ground. After a few words of advice, Goku places his son on the ground safely and disappears. Gohan, taking in his father's words, gets back and turns to Bojack with fire in his eyes. Gohan transforms into Super Saiyan 2, surprising Bojack and his crew. Gohan beats Bido and Bujin each in one hit, breaking them both in half, and Zangya is killed when Bojack uses her as a shield from Gohan. The angry young Saiyan then slams his fist into Bojack's stomach, with it blowing a hole in his stomach and out through his back. As a last resort, Bojack powers up his Galactic Buster and Gohan prepares a Kamehameha. The energies clash together and in the blinding light Bojack is killed. Gohan, exhausted, falls backwards laughing as Goku praises him from Other World, and King Kai jokes that he broke the rules of going back to Earth while dead. After the events, everyone is in hospital watching the news that Hercule is the one who defeated the alien intruders and is called a true hero while everyone jokes about him.

As in Super Android 13!, the film closes with Piccolo and Vegeta on the roof, arms folded and backs turned to each other, isolating themselves from the celebration.

Dragon Ball Z : Dead Zone

The movie begins with Piccolo being attacked and supposedly killed by a group of shadowed fighters. The movie then cuts to Chi-Chi along with her father, Ox King, and Gohan being attacked by an unknown group of warriors. Goku is out fishing during the attack and after sensing danger, he returns only to find his son has been kidnapped. The group responsible for the attack are Garlic Jr.'s henchmen, and it is later revealed that they were not so much holding Gohan ransom for any reason, but because they were after the four-star Dragon Ball that was attached to his hat. After retrieving the remaining Dragon Balls, Garlic Jr. summons Shenron and he immediately wishes for immortality. Shenron, never having to grant this type of demand before, grants Garlic Jr. his wish. A furious Goku arrives to try and take back his son, but soon discovers Garlic Jr.'s new power. Kami makes an appearance (which surprises Garlic Jr., who thought that his henchmen had killed Piccolo) and meets up with Goku, and describes a brief history of Garlic Jr. and his father Garlic. Goku then proceeds to try to find Gohan when he is attacked by the villain's gang, whilst Kami faces Garlic Jr.

After brief fighting, Krillin and Piccolo arrive to help. Piccolo gets revenge for being attacked earlier by defeating Garlic Jr.'s henchman Sansho, while Goku manages to defeat the other two henchmen Ginger and Nicky. Meanwhile, Kami is getting brutally outmatched by Garlic Jr., until Goku and Piccolo rescue him. And with Garlic Jr.'s newly obtained immortality and a new muscular second form, it seems not even Earth's warriors can take him down. But when Goku & Piccolo work together, two-against-one prevails, and Garlic Jr. is outclassed. Angry at his defeat, Garlic Jr. unleashes his ultimate attack, and bursting with anger, he opens up a portal known as the "Dead Zone" (hence the name of the film). Intending to suck his enemies into the void, Garlic Jr. becomes frustrated with Goku's ability to avoid the Dead Zone, and he decides to handle Goku himself, and later force him into the Dead Zone. Things looking extremely difficult for Earth's hero, Goku's son, Gohan, becomes enraged witnessing his father and friends in danger and releases his latent energy, blasting Garlic Jr. into his own vortex to be trapped for an eternity. Remarkably, in the end of it all, Gohan doesn't remember a thing of what happened, instead believing that his father defeated Garlic Jr., and with amazement, Goku figures his son is no ordinary boy, but one with a great hidden potential. At the end of the movie, Piccolo is seen from above, looking down on Goku and his friends and vows that one day, he will defeat Goku.

Dragon Ball Z : Fusion Reborn

The movie begins with Goku fighting in another Other World Tournament against Pikkon during the Buu saga. At the same time, a teenage "psyche ogre" is guarding an evil-purification machine, but he is distracted with his heavy metal music. He accidentally doesn't pay attention and the machine gets too full and breaks, releasing all of the evil energy at once. As a result, on Earth, many of the dead have been brought back to life, including previous villains from the Dragon Ball Z series and movies, and some real life ones like Hitler (however he is named "The Dictator" in the English version) (this indicates the films are in the same continunity), and Gohan and Videl are summoned to take care of them.

Bulma and the others gather the Dragonballs, and summon Shenron. They wish for all the revived souls to return to the Other World, but Shenron informs them that he can send them back but there is nothing stopping them from staying back, and that something is wrong in the Other World and only King Yemma can solve the problem.

The Grand Kai then sends Goku and Pikkon to go to King Yemma and see what's going on. When they arrive, they find that the Other World has been changed into a colorful, weird world filled with colorful stones. King Yemma has been imprisoned in a barrier, and the teenager has been mutated by the spiritual waste into a big ugly monster named Janemba. Pikkon attempts to break the barrier, which can only be done by swearing at it, and Goku begins fighting the monster. The monster has strange powers that allow him to defy reality (such as creating a portal to punch through that leads right to Goku), and even as a Super Saiyan 2, Goku is losing. He then powers up to Super Saiyan 3 to defeat the monster, making Janemba the second enemy (after Majin Buu) to force Goku to turn Super Saiyan 3. Goku subsequently dominates Janemba and makes quick work of him, but the monster, though defeated, morphs into a smaller, more powerful form.

On Earth, Mr. Satan (Hercule in the English version) is winning over the zombies. Frieza and his henchmen arrives shortly after Gohan and Videl get rid of a large group of zombies and Frieza starts to taunt Gohan. However, Gohan defeats him and all the other villains. Back in the Other World, Pikkon discovers that cursing at the jelly bean prison causes it to break. Meanwhile, Janemba makes a sword, and starts to easily beat Goku. He traps him in a triangular cage made from Blood Pond, then cuts it down to just fit Goku.

However, just as Janemba attempts to deal the finishing blow, Vegeta dashes in and helps him; due to the imbalances caused by Janemba, Vegeta has regained his physical form. He starts to fight Janemba in his Super Saiyan 2 form, but is no match for him. Goku breaks out of Blood Pond to help, but also is defeated. Both Goku and Vegeta take cover in a cage of spikes. Goku knows they cannot win as separate entities, so he suggests using the fusion technique. Vegeta becomes skeptical, first off that the pose for the Fusion Dance is embarrassing, and furthermore tells him he would rather die than to fuse with a low class Saiyan. But Goku calmly retorts that Vegeta already is dead. After an attack by Janemba that the two barely avoid, Goku persuades him to agree, and then they try the Fusion Dance. Vegeta, however, fails to extend his forefinger at the last second, ruining the fusion, and Veku is created. This fat fighter is weak and can do little but fart in Janemba's face. Right when Janemba is about to destroy him, the Fusion runs out and Goku and Vegeta escape. Vegeta curses Goku, saying Fusion is useless, but King Kai points out that it is Vegeta's fault that the Fusion went wrong. Pikkon then comes after giving up on the ice-like shield and begins to fight Janemba to give Goku and Vegeta more time to perform the fusion. He figures that Janemba is made of the same material as the shield, and begins cursing at it. Surprisingly, it works, and the creature is caught completely by surprise. However, it is able to incapacitate Pikkon, although those precious few seconds allowed Goku and Vegeta to perform the Fusion Dance, which is successful, forming Gogeta.

Back on Earth, Goten and Trunks sense their fathers fusing, and also fuse to create Gotenks. Gotenks defeats Hitler's army with the Super Kamikaze Ghost Attack in one shot. Gogeta is formed, and he quickly defeats Janemba with his ultimate attack, Stardust Breaker. As a result, the teenage demon returns. Scared by the angry look on Gogeta's face, he runs away. Hell is returned to normal and King Yemma is freed. All of the souls are returned to the machine, which is restored. Goku and Vegeta defuse and bid each other a friendly farewell as Vegeta disappears.

On Earth, Gohan, Goten, Videl and Trunks are returning home. Goten and Trunks joke about Gohan and Videl kissing back in town, and are chased home by a cross Gohan. (In the original version, Goten and Trunks brag about how they fought against "someone you know" Hitler, and annoy Gohan by not telling him who it was). Meanwhile, Shenron remains summoned, and asks if anyone still wants to use the wish.

Dragon Ball Z : Wrath Of The Dragon

The movie begins with a young boy on a distant planet frantically searching his current area, sword at the ready. Suddenly a loud noise alerts him that the thing he was searching for is behind him. However, it is too late to react as the young boy is smashed under the foot of a giant creature. Off in the distance, a villainous laugh can be heard.

The movie then cuts to Earth as a bank robbery is taking place. The bank robbers are getting away when Great Saiyaman, Gohan’s superhero alter ego, stops the car with his foot and smashes the front end flinging the felons out the car to confront Great Saiyaman II, Videl’s superhero alias (She is called the Great Saiyawoman in the English dub). They apprehend the felons and turn them in to the police, all the while being spied on by some strange old man in the shadows. A short while later, they are summoned again from their school to rescue an old man who wants to commit suicide. When Gohan and Videl arrive on the scene, they discover that he is the same man who had been spying on them. After rescuing him, the old man introduces himself as Hoi and tells the two about the legendary warrior Tapion and that he needs their help in releasing him from the music box he is being held in, as the Earth would be endangered if he were not released. Gohan tries to open the box with his massive strength but to no avail. The old man tells them he knows of the Dragon Balls, and advises the couple to use them to open the box. They agree to bring the box to Bulma’s home first to see if there was another way to open the mysterious box, not knowing that Hoi had other plans on his mind.

They arrive at Bulma’s house with Goku, Goten, and Krillin. After analyzing the box, Goku tries his hand at opening the box but he cannot open it either. So it is decided to gather the Dragon Balls and summon Shenron to see if he can open it. After summoning Shenron, Tapion is released and the music box shatters into pieces. Angry at the fact that he was released, Tapion demands that he be resealed in the box, impossible due to the damage done by his emergence. A furious Tapion storms off, determined to stay alone in order to hide the fact he was holding the upper half of the creature called the Hirudegarn in his body. He isolates himself in a dilapidated building. The warrior is visited regularly by Trunks, who has taken a liking to him and brings him food, but Tapion refuses to eat and rebuffs Trunks' attempts to bond with him. Trunks only becomes more determined to crack the loner's icy exterior, as he sees in Tapion what Goten has in Gohan, something he never had (and presumably lost when Gohan started dating Videl): an older brother.

Shortly after Tapion is released, Hirudegarn's lower half starts to wreck West City. Gohan and Videl arrive at the scene to investigate, but shortly after they arrive, they are almost swept away by the monster's tail. They execute their Great Saiyaman poses, however Hirudegarn's legs are not impressed; he throws the two heroes to opposite sides of the street. Gohan, with Videl's support, immediately counter-attacks. After the short battle, Videl thinks Gohan has won, but Gohan says it isn't over yet. Tapion comes to aid Gohan and Videl by playing a magical tune on his ocarina, weakening Hirudegarn's bottom half, causing it to vanish. Leaving the battlefield, Tapion comes to believe that Hoy has already killed Minosha, Tapion’s younger brother.

Later on, while Trunks is again visiting Tapion, Hoy attempts to steal the ocarina from Tapion. Hoy is confronted by Trunks. The devious Hoy tells Trunks that Tapion is the true monster. The young Saiyan doesn't believe him, and instead gives the instrument back to Tapion. Tapion then befriends Trunks, and asks him to dine with him. Tapion is invited by Trunks to stay at Capsule Corporation. While there, Tapion explains the whole story to Bulma.

Tapion starts his story beginning thousands of years ago. On Konack, a planet in the southern galaxy of the universe, a group of black magicians, the Kash-phar, use a spell on a statue to bring the monster it depicted to life. The monster, Hirudegarn, goes on a rampage and kills everyone who tries to get in his way, devastating the planet. Two young heroes, Tapion and his brother Minosha, manage to freeze the monster in his tracks by each playing their divine ocarina, giving a priest the opportunity to cut the monster in half with a divine sword. Since Hirudegarn can't be killed at the time, his upper-half is sealed in Tapion and the other half in Minosha. However, fearing that the monster might reappear someday, the brothers are separated, each sealed in a music box, and shot into opposite ends of the galaxy. The music box holding Tapion lands on Earth. Soon after, Hoy, one of the Kash-phar, becomes determined to resurrect the monster to rule the universe. He releases Hirudegarn's lower half on a distant planet and easily disposes of Minosha, with the monster crushed the young warrior underfoot. Now on Earth, Hoy plans to unite the Hirudegarn’s body and release the creature on Earth.

After hearing Tapion’s story, Bulma decides to create a room based on the broken music box design and the music the ocarina produces so that Tapion can finally rest.

Tapion tries sleeping inside the new chamber, but he has a terrible nightmare that causes him to destroy the chamber. At the same time, Hirudegarn's lower half is once again wreaking havoc, as he draws many men and women into his tail to devour their life energy. The next morning Goku, Gohan, Goten, and Videl arrive at Bulma’s house to inspect the destroyed chamber. Tapion appears suddenly, warning everyone the lower half of the creature is on the loose. To stop the creature from uniting its body he asks the group to kill him, in turn killing the creature’s upper half. Then however Hoy and the lower half of the Hirudegarn appear to stop anyone from killing Tapion. When Tapion is about to play the tone from the ocarina, the power of the lower half being so close to Tapion causes the upper half in Tapion’s body to react and release itself. Hoy succeeds in his plans, and with the monster back together, he believes nothing can stop him. A battle begins. Goten transforms into his Super Saiyan form, Goku transforms into his Super Saiyan 2 form, and Gohan powers up to his Ultimate Gohan form to do battle. They launch their counterattack, but are quickly beaten since the monster can easily dodge by teleporting and countering their attacks. Gohan is grabbed and just before he is about to be squeezed into a pulp by Hirudegarn, Vegeta saves him by firing a ki blast at Hirudegarn's arm and proceeds to fight. He transforms into a Super Saiyan 2. After a brief fight Vegeta is thrown into a nearby building but is knocked out after he saves the people in the building from Hirudegarn's flame attack by using all his powers to create a barrier strong enough to withstand the attack. Goku comes in to help but still is unable to beat the monster and is knocked out. Goten and Trunks become Gotenks with the Fusion Dance. Gotenks, now a Super Saiyan 3, seems to be enough to fight the monster and fires his Die Die Missile Barrage attack at the monster. Hirudegarn is believed to be dead or at least neutralized but the attack only causes him to evolve into his second, more powerful form. Now in his new insect-like form, Hirudegarn mows Gotenks down to the ground and splits Gotenks back into Goten and Trunks. Gohan and Videl are then thrown into a building and Goku into some rubble. However, Goku isn't out and keeps on fighting with all his might.

Just then, Tapion plays the ocarina again and manages to seal Hirudegarn inside himself. He then asks Trunks to kill him with his own sword, which will destroy the trapped monster. Trunks hesitates at first, but is about to do as requested when Hirudegarn breaks free. His ocarina is destroyed in the process. Hoy (who's been watching the whole fight) mocks Tapion for being so foolish, but is killed as Hirudegarn steps on and crushes him. Just then Goku reappears in his powerful Super Saiyan 3 form and a battle begins between Goku and the Hirudegarn. Nevertheless, Trunks tries to fight Hirudegarn too with Tapion's sword and manages to cut off the monster's tail, but Goku stops Trunks. Gohan yells at Goku about the weakness of the Hirudegarn which Goku has already seen and uses his Dragon Fist to pierce through Hirudegarn, obliterating the monster.

With the monster gone for good, Tapion uses Bulma's time machine to go back to his own planet, after giving his sword to Trunks.

Though Yamcha is a skilled swordsman^[33]^[34]^[35] he is an exceptional martial artist.^[36] His signature technique is the Rogafūfūken, literally "Wolf Fang Wind Fist" (Wolf Fang Fist in the English dub), a quick flurry of punches and kicks.^[37] Yamcha uses the technique often during the Dragon Ball anime, though by Dragon Ball Z, he appears to have discarded its use. He has the ability to perform the Kamehameha, a concentrated beam of a chi energy blast that many other characters in the series have the ability to perform as well.^[38] Yamcha also uses the Sôkidan, literally "Manipulated Energy Bullet" (Spirit Ball in the English dub), a technique that forms a ball of chi energy to assault an opponent with. He can fully control the ball, allowing it to home in on enemies and to go underground for a surprise attack.^[39] He also possesses superhuman strength, speed and reflexes. Unable to keep the pace with the rest of the Z warriors, Yamucha retired from fighting twice; the first time to play professional baseball after the first death of Son Goku, and the second time after his near-death experience fighting against androids #19 and #20. In spite of this, Yamucha is arguably one of the strongest human beings alive.

Like other characters in the series, Yamcha has the ability of flight, which he uses many times throughout the story.

Yamcha's appearance stays relatively the same for the majority of the series, although his clothes and hairstyle are changed several times.^[6]^[7]^[8]^[9]^[10]^[11]^[12]^[13]^[14] Many of Yamcha's hairstyles are also used by Son Gohan at various points in his life.^[10]^[15]^[14] During the Android Saga, Android #19's scanner reads that Yamcha is 183 centimeters tall and weighs 68 kilograms.^[16] Yamcha is shown to be a baseball player in the anime filler material for Dragon Ball Z. This was suggested by Toriyama.^[17] The first kanji Yamcha has on his clothes "樂" stands for "happy" or "music". After training with Master Roshi, he takes the turtle kanji "亀" as a sign of respect.^[18] Later, after training with King Kai, he wears both "Kame" and "Kaio" kanji. He wears them the opposite way Goku did, "Kame" on the back, "Kaio" on the chest, except in Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might where he wears the "Kaio" kanji on the back and "Kame" on the chest.^[19]

When Toriyama decided to create the Dragon Ball manga, he used Chinese author Wu Cheng'en's Journey to the West as a prototype for his own series.^[3]^[4] The role prototype for Yamcha was Gojō, the river monster, from Toriyama's one-shot series Dragon Boy.^[5] Gojō was based on Sha Wujing, the bandit from the Journey to the West that eventually joins the heroes' side. When translated from Chinese into Japanese-language, Sha Wujing becomes Sa Gojō.

Trunks as a Super Saiyan.

Trunks is an impressive fighter who can exhibit superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, and energy waves. All of which can be utilized by the use of chi. His most well known techniques are the Finishing Buster (フィニッシュバスター, Finisshu Basutā^?) and Burning Attack (バーニングアタック, Bāningu Atakku^?) which is known for high speed arm movements before execution.^[8] His main means of conveyance is a technique called buku-jutsu (舞空術, lighter than air^?) which gives him the ability of flight.^[9] However, Trunks does not rely on this techinque as his only conveyance as he can also be seen piloting various crafts manufactured by his family's company including the time machine which allowed him to visit Goku in the past.^[10]

Both incarnations can at least transform into basic Super Saiyan although their achievement of this form differs between incarnation. Future Trunks achieved this in his early teens but even this varies in media. In the TV special he would ascend after observing the body of the recently deceased Future Gohan.^[11] Whereas, In the manga, he is shown to be a Super Saiyan for some time.^[5] Present Trunks would be shown to have the ability at the age of eight.^[12] In the Cell saga, Trunks would gain the ability ascend to 2nd and 3rd Super Saiyan grades^[13] during his training with Vegeta in the Room of Time and Mind. Unfortunately, these forms would decrease his speed greatly and so he would abandon them after his first initial fight with Cell.^[14]

As a child, Present Trunks could fuse (or merge) with Goten to become the powerful being named Gotenks; this is through the Metamorese technique called the Fusion Dance, which was taught to them by Goku.^[15]^[16] In this temporal form they could achieve Super Saiyan 3 with ease, a feat that was very difficult for Goku to achieve and maintain.^[17]

Trunks is also known for his use of his longsword which he keeps mounted across his back. Many fans often mistake this sword for the legendary Z-Sword due their similar appearance. As a child, Present Trunks was supposedly given the sword as a gift by the warrior Tapion after the monster Hirudegarn was defeated in the film Wrath of the Dragon.^[18] However it is unknown how Future Trunks come to possess it as the story has never been chronicled by Toriyama or Toei Animation. In GT the sword was only featured in the opening introduction to the series, but was not used in any episodes. Ironically, in an early concept lithograph for GT by Toriyama, Trunks is pictured brandishing a pistol instead.^[19] Present Trunks can also be seen wielding the sword in the opening introduction to the video game Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout.

Trunks' second incarnation would make his appearance as an infant in chapter 337 Tsudō Super Senshi-tachi (集う超戦士たち, Super Warriors Assemble^?), published on August 26, 1991.^[7] In this part of the story, he was only featured as a background character to provide consistency and continuity to the story. When he was eight, Trunks participated in 25th Tenkaichi Budokai and defeated Son Goten in the junior division. Eager to compete in the adult division, he and Goten together posed as the fighter Mighty Mask and were pitted against #18 in a battle royal. But unfortunately they were disqualified when #18 blew their cover, revealing that they were really two people.

Trunks in Dragon Ball GT.

Upon the arrival of Majin Buu in chapter 460 and episode 231, Trunks was forced to train with Goten in the Room of Time and Mind to become the super warrior Gotenks. Gotenks fought Buu, first in the time dimension, then in the real world until the thirty minute fusion time limit expired. Through Buu's treachery they, along with Piccolo, were absorbed by Buu, thus increasing Buu's power. Once freed, Trunks, along with Goten, Gohan, and Piccolo were killed when Kid Buu destroyed the Earth. After being resurrected, Trunks helped to rally the people on Earth to support Goku's Super Genki Dama in his defeat of Buu. At the end of the series, Trunks, now grown up, participated in the 28th Tenkaichi Budokai against the fighter Otokosuki in Chapters 518-519.

By the GT series, a 23 year old Trunks would accompany Goku and Pan into space to recover the Black Star Dragon Balls. Within episodes 2-15, They would have many strange encounters and meet many unusual characters including the robot named Giru who would act as the gang's Dragon Radar. Upon arriving on Giru's home world the Machine Planet M2 in episode 16, the trio would be hijacked by Dr. Myu's robots and Trunks would be solidified in living metal for study. Ironically, the contents of the plate was not really Trunks, but a cleverly made decoy by both Trunks and Giru. Trunks would use the opportunity to uncover Dr. Myu's plan, which was to awaken Baby, and sabotage the process. Unfortunately Trunks' plan failed as Baby had managed to escape to Earth, When they returned home Baby had managed to possess Vegeta becoming "Baby Vegeta" and brainwash everyone else into becoming his followers. Shortly after arriving, Trunks would also fall victim to Baby's mind control and battle Goku. He along with everyone else would be freed on new planet Plant. By episode 41 Trunks had managed to become the CEO of Capsule Corporation. But he would not take the job seriously. During the Super 17 saga, he along with Goten would travel the globe fighting the villains that escaped from Hell. He would help battle Omega Shenron and help power-up Goku's Super Saiyan 4 form.

Future Trunks

The first and most identified incarnation of the character that readers and viewers get to see would come to be known production wise as Future Trunks (未来のトランクス, Mirai no Torankusu^?, Trunks of the Future). This incarnation first appeared in the manga chapter 331 Nazo no Shōnen (謎の少年, The Young Boy of Mystery^?) first published in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine on July 15, 1991.^[4] Here he is a mysterious seventeen year old who appears and singlehandedly kills Frieza and his father King Cold. Upon Goku's return from planet Namek in the following chapter, Trunks would confide with Goku and unknowingly to Piccolo (Due to his acute Namekkian hearing) his tragic story.

As told in flashbacks in the anime series, the stand alone manga story Trunks the Story: A Warrior All Alone (トランクスザストーリー－たったひとりの戦士－, Trunks za Sutōrī -Tatta Hitori no Senshi-^?),^[5] the TV special History of Trunks, and the third side story Lonely Future Warrior!! Trunks (孤独の未来戦士!! トランクス, Kodoku no Mirai Senshi!! Torankusu^?),^[6] Trunks had traveled from twenty years in the future where the world was in constant ruin due to the terror of the two artificial humans #17 and #18. By this time Goku had succumbed to an unknown heart virus and rest of the Z warriors, with the exception of Gohan, had fallen at the hands of the artificial humans. Trunks, at the age of thirteen, was living with Future Bulma and secretly training with Future Gohan. After Gohan's inevitable death, Trunks would assume the mantel of Earth's sole protector against the artificial humans for the next three years. But even he would be no match against them. Fortunately, Bulma had been working on a time machine that could help change history. Once he had informed Goku of the events to come, Trunks gives Goku a special vaccine and return to his own time.

Trunks would return to help the present day Z warriors battle the artificial humans, in chapter 346 and episode 131. With appearance of Cell, Trunks would train with Vegeta in the Room of Time and Mind (Hyperbolic Time Chamber in English media). After Vegeta's defeat, Trunks would fight Cell in his newly gained Perfect state. But Trunks' 3rd Super Saiyan grade proved to be ineffective so he willfully concedes. He would participate in the Cell Games and be mortally wounded by Cell immediately following his ascension to "Beyond Perfection". Afterwards, he would return to his own timeline in the future and defeat the artificial humans and Cell within his time in chapters 419-420 and episodes 193.

He would appear one more time in the ninth Dragon Ball Z film Bojack Unbound to participate in the special Tenkaichi Budokai sponsored by Mr. X.S. Cash. Here he would unwillingly fight Bojack's henchman Gokua.

Trunks's Appearance

Trunks has a slender muscular physique with his most dominate genes coming from his maternal side, thus resulting in his having blue eyes and lavender colored hair which is mostly shown in the undercut style.^[2] During his early teens, this style was parted on his right side and his late teens it was parted in the middle. As he is half human, his hair tends to grow. Because of this, he wore his hair in an over the shoulders style during Cell Games arc. The color caused some confusion among the others characters that met him as Vegeta pointed out in chapter 139 and episode 120 a Saiyan's hair color is generally black.^[3]

His facial features are nearly identical to his father's as pointed out by Bulma when awaiting Goku's return in the aforementioned chapter and episode.^[3] Trunks can transform into a Super Saiyan which causes his hair to spike on end and takes on a golden color and his eyes a Turquoise or green color.

Trunks is also known for his unique fashion sense. When the character was first introduced he wore a cropped jacket that was steel blue in the manga and han purple in the anime with a Capsule Corporation patch on his upper left sleeve that was red in the manga and white in the anime. Along with a black tanktop and baggy gray pants. During the Cell games arc he wore a pair of Saiyan battle fatigues identical to his father which was made by Bulma. As a child during the Majin Buu saga he wore a green gi with matching orange belt and wrist bands. In the GT series he wore a tan blazer, a blue kerchief over a black longsleve shirt which matched his blue socks, and a pair of cuffed khaki shorts. Ironically he has worn the same type of shoes with all three outfits which are a pair of boot length strapped sneakers that feature dark colored segments on the toe and heel.

Trunks is the half-Saiyan son of Vegeta, the prince of the dying race of fictional aliens called the Saiyans, and Bulma, the heir of a massive company called Capsule Corporation. In keeping with the family's tradition of using puns for names, Trunks' name is derived from the term for men's swim shorts.

Bulma's Personality

Bulma's personality is like the typical female characters in Toriyama's stories; nagging and temperamental. Bulma at first is identical to the image of a pampered city girl for most of the series; arrogant and adventurous, but afraid of being alone. Her arrogance can be seen to stem from her intellect; Bulma is most recognized for her fierce determination to get what she wants, and can be viewed as reckless in those quests. Bulma is well known for her intellectual approach to situations and her sexiness. Master Roshi frequently harasses her. She is also very proud of her abilities and can be very cantankerous when slighted, which may indicate a similar approach with other men. Throughout the series, Bulma goes through many life-threatening situations and is often a damsel-in-distress, needing the protection of Goku and the others.

Bulma mellows out as the series continues in the present timeline, ultimately befriending Vegeta and helping him adapt to Earth. Bulma's appearance in the anime differs slightly than her appearance in the manga. In the manga, her hair is usually depicted in a shade of fuchsia, while in the anime and the first chapter of the manga, her hair is a shade of turquoise. Her hair in the film Dragon Ball: The Path to Power is changed to the manga color for unknown reasons.

Bulma's appearance in the series is not as consistent as the other characters as she quite often changes her hair style and clothing. Bulma has also been seen topless, in several chapters and one episode. She is the only female character in the entire Dragon Ball series to appear topless. Bulma (ブルマ Buruma^?) is a fictional character who first appears in the Dragon Ball manga created by Akira Toriyama, followed by three anime adaptations. She first appears in the first chapter Bulma and Son Goku (ブルマと孫悟空 Buruma to Son Gokū^?) first published in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine on December 3, 1984.^[3] She was originally portrayed as a secondary main character, next to the main protagonist Son Goku. Her role is quickly downplayed as the series continues, though she does continue her role as a supporting character for the remainder of the series. Bulma is the daughter of Dr. Briefs; the founder of Capsule Corp., a fictional corporation that creates special capsules that are often used to store objects of various sizes. Being the daughter of a brilliant scientist, Bulma is also a scientist, as well as an inventor and engineer. She is most credited for inventing the Dragon Radar, a fictional device that is specifically designed to detect the energy signal emitted by a Dragon Ball.

Bulma's role as an inventor becomes important at several points in the series. Several of her creations were major to various plotlines, including a microband that could make her shrink, the time machine that brought her son Trunks to the past during Dragon Ball Z and the generator that allowed her husband Vegeta to achieve Super Saiyan 4 in Dragon Ball GT.

Krillin's Abilities

Krillin has many abilities including, super-strength, super-speed, and the ability to fly using his chi energy, also known as Bukū-jutsu (舞空術 Air Dance Technique^?). His main techniques include the Kamehameha (かめはめ波^?, lit. "Turtle Striking Wave"), an attack he learned from Roshi, which enables him to emit a powerful chi energy blast from his hands.^[22] Kakusandan (拡散弾^?, lit. "Spread Bullet"), another chi attack, involves firing two blasts, one from each hand, and merging them before directing the blast above an opponent where it will break up and rain down on them, he was only seen using this twice -- the first time was very successful as he managed to wipe out three Saibamen with it. He has also been known to use the Double Kihō (ダブル気砲 Double Air Gun^?). From Tien, he obtained the Taiyōken (太陽拳^?, lit. "Solar Fist", renamed "Solar Flare" in the English dub), an attack Krillin is capable of using to blind his opponents, sometimes used to make a quick escape.^[23] A technique he uses is the Kienzan (気円斬^?, lit. "Energy Circle Razor", renamed "Destructo Disc" in the English dub), which he does by putting his hand in the air and creating an electric floating disc, using it to slice through his enemies.

Krillin's Appearance

Krillin's appearance stays relatively the same for the majority of the series. He is first introduced at the age of thirteen, with a shaved head and still dressed in the clothing worn at the monastery he had been training at. He does not possess a nose, and has six spots of incense burns on his forehead, a reference to the practice of Shaolin monks. After the end of the Cell Games Saga Krillin stops shaving his head, and grows his hair out.^[6] His outfit also changes as the series progress. When he first appears in Dragon Ball, he wears the yellow-and-orange garb of a monk. Later, he wears the orange gi uniform that is presented to both himself and Goku by Master Roshi in honor of their first martial arts competition.^[7] Occasionally he is seen in casual clothes, but for the most part continues to dress for training or fighting at all times.^[8] During the Frieza Saga, he wears Saiyan armor provided by Vegeta,^[9] but during the Cell Saga he returns to wearing the orange gi, accompanied by a blue short-sleeved undershirt and boots.^[10] Prior to the Great Saiyaman Saga, Krillin opted to settle down with his new family, and allows his black hair to finally grow out. From this point on he is shown wearing a workout outfit consisting of a red short-sleeved shirt and brown drawstring pants.^[11] Finally, he is shown in DBGT sporting a moustache, wearing grey pants, shirt and tie with a cardigan in his few appearances.

Krillin is introduced in Dragon Ball as a rival of the main character, Son Goku. Later in the series, he can also be seen having a close relationship with Goku, as well as his child, Son Gohan. Piccolo (ピッコロ Pikkoro^?) is a fictional character from the Dragon Ball manga, authored by Akira Toriyama. Piccolo was first introduced as the reincarnation of the evil Piccolo Daimao in chapter #167 The Tenka'ichi Budokai Disturbance (波乱の天下一武道会 Haran no Tenkaichi Budōkai^?) first published in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine on April 4, 1988,^[2] making him a demon and archrival of the primary protagonist named Son Goku. However, it is later revealed that he is from the race of alien beings called Namekians. Piccolo is usually referred to as male, but as he is Namekian he is technically genderless. After Goku barely defeats Piccolo, Piccolo decides to team up with Goku and his friends in order to beat newer, more dangerous threats. He also trains Goku's first child Son Gohan, and they form a bond so strong that Piccolo sacrifices himself to save Gohan's life. But Piccolo is later resurrected by the Dragon Balls and permanently joins Goku and the others in their battles against other, even more powerful villains.

The character's name comes from the musical instrument piccolo. Around the start of the Frieza Saga, it's revealed that Piccolo's name means "another world" in the Namekian language.^[3]

Vegeta's Abilities

Vegeta has the ability to create and enhance attacks with the use of chi. Vegeta has the ability to use buku-jutsu (舞空術, lighter than air^?) which enables him to fly.^[3] Constant training and his Saiyan heritage have given him superhuman strength, speed and reflexes.^[3]

Vegeta is known to give names for his various energy attacks. In his early appearance, Vegeta is seen to use attacks similar to several of the protagonists of the series, such as a ki disk (気円斬, kien ki^?), a two fingered laser-like blast, and a chi wave similar to Goku's Kamehameha blast. This beam known as the Garlic Gun (ギャリック砲, Gyarikku Hō^?, renamed Galick Gun in the English dub) is used by Vegeta during his battle against Goku in an attempt to destroy the Earth.^[3] The Galick Gun is the main attack used by Vegeta in most Dragon Ball Z video games although he uses it only once in the manga. Vegeta later develops the Big Bang Attack (ビッグ・バン・アタック, Biggu Ban Atakku^?) and the Final Flash (ファイナルフラッシュ, Fainaru Furasshu^?) attacks, which are much more powerful than his older energy attacks.^[4]^[5] Vegeta's most commonly used attack in the series is when he bombards an opponent with an array of small chi blasts. Vegeta is not known to have a name for this attack, but it is officially called Renzoku Energy Dan (連続エネルギー弾^?). Also in Dragon Ball GT he displays a powerful new attack entitling it the Final Shine Attack (ファイナルシャインアタック, Fainaru Shain Atakku^?), where Vegeta uses his right hand to fire off a massive beam of green chi that widens with distance.

Vegeta also possesses several transformations that greatly enhance his abilities to varying degrees. Early in the series, he has the ability to become an Oozaru, which increases his power tenfold, so long as he still has his tail. He gains the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan and, through training, can further transform into advanced states of Super Saiyan as the series continues, including Super Saiyan 2nd Grade and Super Saiyan 2.^[4]^[5]^[6] While he was not able to achieve Super Saiyan 3, in Dragon Ball GT, he reaches Super Saiyan 4.

Vegeta can also fuse with Goku and create a warrior who has the combined power and skills of both. One method is by using the Potara Earrings presented to Goku by the Elder Kai. This results in a 'perfect fusion' creating Vegetto. The other method is by performing the Metamorese Fusion Dance, which creates Gogeta.

When he first appears in the series, Vegeta is arrogant and selfish, having a fierce desire for immortality and galactic rule. He is also vicious and cares for nobody but himself, which is shown when he dispatched his comrade Nappa for failing to defeat Goku. Vegeta's plans are thwarted by Goku. Because of Vegeta's overwhelming pride and ego, being defeated by someone who he considered inferior transforms his character into a jealous and vengeful anti-hero. By the end of the series, Vegeta's bitter rivalry with Goku softens when he comes to respect Goku as an ally and even a friend.

Vegeta's priorities can be seen to gradually change as the series progresses, though one facet remains constant: his rivalry with Goku is fuelled by Goku's ability to stay ahead of him in power. Because of this, Vegeta is seen to pursue an insane desire to surpass Goku in strength, but whenever he seems to train and continually push himself harder than Goku does, he can never close the gap between him and Goku permanently.

Vegeta's initial appearance in the manga is as a short and slightly stocky character, with upright standing hair and a defined widow's peak. Toriyama changed his appearance, gradually making him leaner, more masculine, and more mature-looking. Vegeta's appearance is again modified in Dragon Ball GT, in which he appears with a shorter hairstyle and wearing Western-style casual clothes. As a Saiyan, Vegeta also has a tail, which he loses in his initial battle on Earth with Goku and his allies. Over the course of the series, he has worn several variations of the Saiyan suit, though later on in the series (and subsequently the Dragon Ball GT series) he abandons the Saiyan armour completely for civilian clothing.

Tien Shinhan

Tien Shinhan (天津飯, Tenshinhan^?, nicknamed Tien), known as Shinto in the Harmony Gold dub, is first introduced in chapter 113 of the manga series.^[7] Initially an enemy of Goku who was trained by Roshi's rival the Crane Hermit, Tien soon makes peace with Goku and becomes a Z Fighter. Accompanied by his friend Chiaotzu, Tien enters the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament^[8] and faces Goku, who proves to be a more than worthy opponent. Eventually, after Goku survives every attack thrown at him, Tien destroys the arena with his Kikohou, but Goku jumps into the air and uses his Kamehameha to slam himself into Tien. Both fighters fall down to the ground, but Goku is hit by a passing car, causing him to land on the ground first, which makes Tien the winner. Afterwards, Tien and Chiaotzu become allies of Goku. He participated in the battle against the Saiyans in Dragon Ball Z, in which he is killed by Nappa, along with Chiaotzu, Yamcha and Piccolo. The four of them are trained by King Kai and later revived by Porunga. Tien also participated in the battles against Cell and Majin Buu.

Tien is bald and has three eyes, the third placed on his forehead. The third eye is from becoming enlightened.^[9] When Toriyama began creating the Dragon Ball series, he used Wu Cheng'en's Journey to the West as a prototype for his own work.^[10] Tien's three eyed physical characteristic resembles the story character Erlang Shen, and both are warriors who were originally adversaries of the main character.^[11] His outfits change consistently as the series goes on, and he usually doesn't wear a shirt when fighting. Hirotaka Suzuoki voices him in the Japanese version, while he is voiced by Chris Cason (third season only) and John Burgmeier (fourth season onwards) in the Funimation dub and Matt Smith in the Ocean Group dub.

Goten

Goten (孫悟天, Son Goten^?) is the second and final child of Goku, the series' protagonist. First introduced in the 230 chapter of the manga,^[12] Goten resembles his father in appearance, with the same hair-style and similar clothing. In chapter 324, Toriyama changes his appearance to avoid confusion with Goku to include a shirt bearing his name, and a longer, shaggier hairstyle.^[13] Goten is trained by his older brother Son Gohan in preparation for the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament, which their father would be attending. During the training, Gohan discovered Goten could become a Super Saiyan.^[14] He also possesses the Kamehameha, a technique that concentrates chi energy and is released into a powerful beam.^[15]

In order to save the world from the villain Majin Buu, Goku and Piccolo teach Goten and Trunks the "Fusion" technique, which allows them to transform into a single powerful warrior, Gotenks. Gotenks battles Buu multiple times but even when he transforms into a Super Saiyan 3 he is unable to defeat Buu. Buu temporarily absorbs Gotenks, increasing his own power, but Vegeta and Goku are able to retrieve them from Buu. When Buu destroys the Earth in the 312 chapter, Goten and Trunks are killed.^[16] The Dragon Balls later bring Goten back to life along with the rest of the Earth in order to give energy to Goku's Super Spirit Bomb attack, which defeats Buu.^[17] Goten then returns to a normal life on Earth.

Masako Nozawa voices Goten in Japanese, while he is voiced by Kara Edwards (as a child) and Robert McCollum (as an adult) in the English version.

Cell

Cell (セル, Seru^?) is the ultimate creation of Dr. Gero. He is an artificial life form created using the cells of several characters from the series, including Goku, Piccolo and Frieza. As a result, Cell is able to perform techniques such as the Kamehameha, a powerful energy blast which he gains from the cells of Goku.^[18] In creating the character of Cell, Toriyama tried many different designs before finally settling on the one used in the series. Cell evolves several times throughout his appearances. He originally evolves from a cocoon-like form into his first "Imperfect Form", which is insect-like in appearance. Both his first form and his second "Semi-Perfect Form" have a tail that ends in a stinger-like appendage and allows it to absorb other organisms.^[19] The tail recedes under his wings in his final "Perfect Form", and he can use it to spawn Cell Jr. (セルジュニア, Seru Junia^?), which are minuscule child-like versions of himself.

Requiring androids #17 and #18 to evolve, he finds out that they are already dead in his timeline, so he kills the Trunks of his timeline and uses Trunks' time machine to travel back in time. He eventually absorbs both after many battles and ascends to his final form.^[20]^[21] He decides to hold the "Cell Games", a tournament in which he fights against the Earth's fighters until there are none left, resulting in Earth's destruction.^[22] Cell manages to defeat Goku, but he is eventually killed by a Super Saiyan 2 Gohan with one arm.^[23] Cell appears in Hell in Dragon Ball Z, and makes a few appearances in Dragon Ball GT. Norio Wakamoto voices him in the Japanese anime, Dameon Clarke in the Funimation dub, and Dale Wilson in the Canadian English dub.

Android #17 (人造人間17号, Jinzōningen Jū Nana Gō^?, Artificial Human #17) is a human forcefully turned into a cyborg by Gero along with his sister, #18. The two are released by Gero as a last resort, but they turn on their creator and quickly kill him instead. They begin to travel in order to find and kill Goku, coming into contact with the Z Fighters several times. In Future Trunks' timeline, he is a mass murderer who is later killed by Trunks. #17 returns one last time in Dragon Ball GT, when he fuses with a new #17 created by Doctors Gero and Myu in order to become the Super Android #17, who is finally defeated by Goku and #18. He is voiced by Shigeru Nakahara in Japan, Ted Cole in the Ocean Group dub, and Chuck Huber in the Funimation dub.

Android 18

Android #18 (人造人間18号, Jinzōningen Jū Hachi Gō^?, Artificial Human #18) is a human forcefully turned into a cyborg along with her brother, #17.^[24] After being released by Gero, she travels with #16 and #17 in order to kill Goku, though they are interrupted by Cell and the Z Fighters several times. She and #17 are eventually absorbed by Cell, but later during the Cell Games, a hard blow from Gohan causes Cell to regurgitate her. Though Krillin is unable to wish for her to be turned into a human, he is able to have her self destruct device removed.^[25] Krillin later pursues #18 and, at some point, they marry and have a daughter named Marron.^[26] In Future Trunks' timeline, she is a mass murderer who is later killed by Trunks. She is voiced by Miki Itō in Japan, Enuka Okuma in the Ocean Group dub, and Meredith McCoy in the Funimation dub.

Babidi

Babidi (バビディ, Babidi^?) is the son of Bibidi, the creator of Majin Buu. After Buu is sealed and his father is killed, he sets out to resurrect Buu to help him conquer the universe. Babidi manages to take over the minds of many strong warriors in order to help him achieve his goal, including Demon King Dabura, alien warrior Pui Pui, light-devouring monster named Yakon, and two muscle-bound humans, Yamu and Spopovitch. Babidi uses them to collect energy for Buu's revival, and later enlists Vegeta to help him, though Vegeta is able to ignore his orders. After Buu is revived, Babidi manages to control him with the threat of resealing him, though after being manipulated by Goku, Buu turns on him and shatters his head with a single punch. He later appears in Hell, cheering Goku and Vegeta on during their fight with Kid Buu, and then in Dragon Ball GT, when various villains escape from Hell. He is voiced Jōji Yanami in Japan, Duncan Brannan in the Funimation dub, and Terry Klassen in the Ocean Group dub.

Chiaotzu

Chiaotzu (餃子, Chaozu^?) is a small human that resembles a doll with white skin, red cheeks, and one hair under his hat. Though he is not physically strong, he is skilled with psychokinesis and telepathy. He first studies under the Crane Hermit with his close friend, Tien Shinhan. After Tien realizes that the Crane Hermit's teachings are wrong, the two leave him and join with Goku and his companions. He continues to support Tien throughout the series, even going as far as self-destructing on Nappa in order to attempt to save him. After the fight with the Saiyans, Chiaotzu no longer becomes involved in battle. He is voiced by Hiroko Emori in Japan, Cathy Weseluck in the Ocean Group dub, and Monika Antonelli in the Funimation dub.

Chi Chi

Chi Chi (チチ^?), known as Chi-Chi in the Viz manga, Chichi in Japanese versions, and Milk in Latin-American TV, is the wife of Goku and the mother of Gohan and Son Goten. She is very protective over the well being of her family, and wishes to remove them from Goku's lifestyle of fighting and constant conflict. She attempts to have Gohan focus on studying during his childhood, but this is interrupted by the constant threats to Earth. She later relaxes with Goten, even training him herself. As the daughter of the Ox-King, she is very strong in her own right, having easily made it to the quarter-finals of the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai. She and Goku first meet as children, and Goku promises to marry her, thinking marriage is a kind of food. She later confronts him to have him fulfill the promise, despite the misunderstanding. She is voiced by Mayumi Shō and Naoko Watanabe in Japan, and Laura Bailey and Cynthia Cranz in the Funimation dub. Chi Chi is played by Jamie Chung in the live-action film Dragonball Evolution.

Dende

Dende (デンデ, Dende^?) is a Namekian child saved from Dodoria by Gohan and Krillin.^[27] He later gains the power to heal after having his power unlocked, which he uses to aid the warriors fighting Frieza until he is killed by the tyrant. After being revived, he lives on New Namek until he is asked by Goku to replace Kami as Earth's guardian and revive the Dragon Balls. He accepts and continues to serve as the guardian throughout the rest of the series. He is very close to Piccolo, who fused with his friend Nail on Namek. He is voiced by Tomiko Suzuki in Japan and Ceyli Delgadillo, Laura Bailey and Justin Cook in the Funimation dub.

Hercule

Hercule, known as Mr. Herculese Satan in Funimation's VHS dubbed release of the "Great Saiyaman" episodes,^[28] and as Mr. Satan (ミスター・サタン, Misutā Satan^?) in Japanese versions and Funimation's uncut releases, is a flamboyant martial artist that becomes a world renowned hero after the Cell Games. After Goku and his companions stop attending the World Tournaments, Hercule starts winning them and becomes the reigning champion for many years. During the Cell Games, he attempts to fight Cell, but even after being swatted away, he is given credit for Cell's death by the media. He is soon called a world hero, gaining great wealth and a city named after him. Though Goku and his companions find his inflated ego and arrogance very annoying, he becomes close to them after befriending the good Majin Buu, helping defeat Kid Buu by using his appeal to get energy from all of the individuals on Earth for the Spirit Bomb, and his daughter, Videl, marries Gohan. He is voiced by Daisuke Gōri in Japan, Don Brown in the Ocean Group dub, and Chris Rager in the Funimation dub.

Kami

Kami (神様, Kami Sama^?) is the guardian residing over the Earth for much of the series. He is the good half of an unnamed Namekian that had to split himself in order to become guardian. The evil half, Piccolo Daimao was later sealed away by humans. After Piccolo Daimao is unleashed and killed by Goku, he spawns a much stronger reincarnation, Piccolo. Seeing a threat, Kami decides to attempt to seal away the new Piccolo in the World Martial Arts Tournament, possessing a human named Shen (dubbed Hero in the English anime) as a guise, but the plan backfires on him. After Goku defeats Piccolo, he eventually reforms, and much later during the Cell saga, Kami agrees to merge and rejoin Piccolo to stand a chance against Cell and the Androids. He is voiced by Takeshi Aono in Japan, Michael Dobson and Dale Wilson in the Ocean Group dub, and Christopher Sabat in the Funimation dub.

King Kai

King Kai, also known as Lord of the Worlds (界王様, Kaiō-sama^?) and North Kai (北の界王, Kita no Kaiō^?), is the Kai of the northern quadrant of the galaxy. His companion is a pet monkey named Bubbles and in the anime he also has a flying grasshopper^{[citation needed]} companion named Gregory. King Kai trains fighters allowed to keep their bodies if they manage to reach his small planet at the end of Snake Way. Before training any students, he forces them to appeal to his strange sense of humor, catch Bubbles, and hit Gregory with a mallet.^[29] He provides Goku with martial arts training and two of his own techniques, the Genki Dama and the Kaio-ken, which King Kai was never able to master. He continues to help Goku and his friends throughout the series, lending his planet locating and telecommunicating abilities for their use. When Goku brings a self-destructing Cell to his planet, the explosion kills King Kai and destroys his planet. As he is already in the Other World, he only gains a halo and in the anime he appears to settle down on Grand Kai's planet. He is voiced by Joji Yanami in Japan, Don Brown in the Ocean Group dub, and Sean Schemmel in the Funimation dub.

Master Roshi

Master Roshi, known in Japanese versions as Kame Sen'nin (亀仙人, Kame Sennin^?) and Muten Rōshi (武天老師^?), is an ancient and wise martial arts master and the first Earthling to wield the Kamehameha. Though he seems frail, he is a mighty warrior, having trained Grandpa Gohan, Ox King, Son Goku, and others. He is a stock character, as he is both the archetypal wise old man and dirty old man, the latter being typical of shōnen manga. Still, he is depicted to be a very wise and gentle person, who loves life and its simple pleasures, but is willing to die if necessary, such as when performing the Mafuba technique (Evil Containment Wave in the English dub) against Piccolo Daimao.^[30] Sometimes he gets cranky, which further provides comic relief. He is bald, with a thick van dyke beard and wears sunglasses. Roshi wears beach clothes or martial arts suits and, during the earlier stages of the series, a turtle shell on his back. He usually wields a walking stick. When wishing to act anonymously, Roshi sometimes uses the name Jackie Chun.

Roshi was originally voiced by Kōhei Miyauchi. Miyauchi's final acting session before he died was for episode 260 of Dragon Ball Z, which he recorded only 3 months before his death. The episode aired on March 15, 1995. In his final line, he yells out "Kuririn!", and is turned into a bar of chocolate by Majin Buu shortly afterwards. Since episode 288 of Dragon Ball Z, Roshi is voiced by Hiroshi Masuoka, who voices him throughout Dragon Ball GT, and in the recent video games, such as Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi. In the 10th anniversary special he is voiced by Kinya Aikawa, and Masaharu Satō voiced him in movie 13. In the Funimation dub, he is voiced by Mike McFarland. He is portrayed by Chow Yun-Fat in the live-action film Dragonball Evolution.

Oolong

Oolong (ウーロン, Ūron^?) is a shapeshifting, anthropomorphic pig that uses his abilities for his own greedy desires. He was expelled from shapeshifting training for stealing the teacher's underwear, so he lacks the ability to change his form for more than five minutes at a time without a break. He joins with Goku to search for the Dragon Balls and eventually steal them, but he abandons his plans. In Dragon Ball Z, he is often in the company of Roshi. He is voiced by Naoki Tatsuta in Japan, Doug Parker and Scott Mcneil in the Ocean Group dub, and Mark Britten and Bradford Jackson in the Funimation dub.

Pan

Pan (パン^?) is the granddaughter of Goku. Pan's ancestry comes from both humans, and the extraterrestrials called the Saiyans, which becomes the primary race throughout the Dragon Ball galaxies. Pan is the daughter of the first Saiyan Human hybrid to appear in the series, Gohan, and his human wife Videl. In the Japanese anime, she was voiced by Yuko Minaguchi. In the English versions of DBZ, she is voiced by Kate Bristol in the Funimation dub and Brenna O'Brien in the Ocean Group dub. In the English versions of Dragon Ball GT, she is voiced by Elise Baughman in the Funimation dub and Caitlynne Medrek in the Blue Water dub.

Piccolo Daimao

Piccolo Daimao (ピッコロ大魔王, Pikkoro Daimaō^?), known as King Piccolo in the English dubs and Demon King Piccolo in the Viz manga, is the evil half of the Namekian that removed his evil in order to become the guardian of the Earth; this negative energy took on a physical form, becoming a cast-off being. He and the good half, Kami, are linked, so if one dies, the other also will die. After being formed, he designates himself as the Great Demon King and begins to terrorize the world. He is eventually imprisoned by Mutaito, the master of Roshi, in a rice cooker for centuries by the suicidal Evil Containment Wave. After being released by Emperor Pilaf, he attempts to kill anyone that could possibly seal him again, uses the Dragon Balls to restore his youth, and takes over the Earth before being confronted by Goku, who, after a long battle, punches a large hole through his abdomen. Before dying, he regurgitates the egg containing his reincarnation, Piccolo Jr., in order to pursue his revenge. He is voiced by Takeshi Aono in Japan, Christopher Sabat in the Funimation dub, and Scott McNeil in the Ocean Group dub. He was played by James Marsters in the live-action film Dragonball Evolution.

Besides Piccolo Jr., Piccolo Daimao creates several offspring in order to help him with his plans. His first offspring, Piano, helps Piccolo formulate his plan until his death. He also creates Tambourine to hunt down the contenders of the World Martial Arts Tournament to keep the sealing technique from resurfacing. Tambourine kills Krillin and beats a weakened Goku, but eventually Goku's Kamehameha vaporizes him. The third, Cymbal, is created to find Dragon Balls, but he is killed and eaten by Yajirobe. The fourth, Drum, is created to battle Tien, who he easily defeats until Goku appears and kills him in one blow. Tambourine is voiced by Ryūsei Nakao in Japan and Dameon Clarke in the English dub; Piano is voiced by Brian Beacock in the English dub; and Drum is voiced by Paul LeBlanc in the English dub.

Puar

Puar (プーアル, Pūaru^?), known as Pu'ar in the Viz manga and Pu-erh in Japanese versions, is a soft-spoken shapeshifting blue creature and the constant companion of Yamcha. The name is revealed to be a pun on Pu-erh tea.^[31] He was designed to slightly resemble a cat.^[32] He uses his abilities to shapeshift into anything to help Yamcha rob passersby in the desert. Afterwards, he travels with Yamcha and Goku during Dragon Ball, and continues to live with Yamcha afterwards. He is voiced by Naoko Watanabe in Japan, Cathy Weseluck in the Ocean Group dub, and Monika Antonelli in the Funimation dub.

Shenron

Shenron (神龍, Shén Lóng^?, lit. "God Dragon"), also known as the Eternal Dragon in the Ocean Group and Funimation dubs, Shenlong in the Viz manga, Shen Long in Japanese versions, and the Dragon God in the Harmony Gold dub, is the wish granting dragon summoned when all of Earth's Dragon Balls are gathered. Shenron can bestow any wish as long as it does not exceed the power of his creator, who must be still alive. Shenron cannot bring back a person from the dead more than once. Shenron can originally only grant one wish, but after being revived by Dende, he is able to grant two at a time. Shenron often threatens to kill the summoner if they do not quickly make their wish, but never follows through with it. He is voiced by Kenji Utsumi and Masaharu Satō in Japan, Don Brown in the Ocean Group dub, and Christopher Sabat in the Funimation dub.

Dragon Ball GT introduces the Black Star Shenron, a much larger red Shenron made by Kami when he and Piccolo Daimao were still one entity. He is summoned when the Black Star Dragon Balls are gathered, and can grant any single wish, regardless of any restrictions placed on the other dragons. He is voiced by Daisuke Gori in Japanese versions and Chris Sabat in the English dub.

Supreme Kai

The Kai are the top-tier gods of the Dragon Ball universe. Like the lower-level Kai, there are five Kai. However, rather than each overseeing one quadrant of the main galaxy, the Kai each administer one quadrant of the entire universe.

Shin, the Supreme Kai (東の界王神, Higashi no Kaiōshin^?), also known as the Eastern Kai, is the supreme ruler of the Eastern Quadrant of the Universe along with his comrades, the North, West, and South Kai, and their leader the Grand Supreme Kai. After Buu's assault on the four Kai five million years before the events of Dragon Ball Z, he is the only survivor, and continues to watch over the universe. He is always found with his bodyguard, Kibito, who has the ability to heal any injury. He attempts to stop Buu from reviving with the help of Goku and his companions, but ends up failing. He is later permanently fused with Kibito, creating a new being, Kibitoshin. He is voiced by Yūji Mitsuya in Japan and Kent Williams in the Funimation dub.

Tuffles

The Tuffles are a nearly extinct race which used to live on the planet Vegeta but were destroyed by the Saiyans. They play a significant role in the history of the Saiyans. Only two survived who were Dr. Raichi and Baby. The Tuffles are unique to the anime only.

Baby

Baby (ベビー, Bebī^?) is a parasitic alien supervillain that first appears in the 22nd episode of Dragon Ball GT. Baby was created by combining the DNA of the king of the Tuffles with a cybernetic body. Baby desires to destroy all of the Saiyans to avenge his people. Baby is first reactivated from a sleep state by his creator, Dr. Myu. He attempts to fight Goku, Trunks, and Pan, but is easily defeated. To boost his power, Baby infects various people with his DNA and begins gathering energy from them. After a second defeat at the hands of the three Saiyans, Baby infects Trunks and then goes to Earth. On Earth he battles Son Goten and Son Gohan, infects them both, and is able to infect Vegeta and make him his primary host. Goku, Trunks, and Pan return to Earth to find the entire population is now under Baby's control. Baby is able to defeat Goku, then he begins using the Black Star Dragon Balls to restore the Planet Plant and transport the Earth population to it. During this time, Baby evolves into an even more powerful form and defeats Goku again. This causes Goku to transform into a Super Saiyan 4. In this new form, Goku is able to defeat Baby-Vegeta. He has Bulma, also under his control, fire a radiation beam at him from her Blutz Wave Generator which enables him to transform into a Golden Great Ape. After a lengthy battle, Baby separates from Vegeta and attempts to escape in a spaceship, vowing to return to destroy the Saiyans. Goku blasts the spaceship with a 10x Kamehameha attack, sending it into the sun. The ship is destroyed and Baby is obliterated.

His seiyū is Yusuke Numata and he is voiced by Mike McFarland in the English dub by Funimation.

Dr. Raichi

Dr. Raichi is the main antagonist of the two-part OVA special Dragon Ball Z Gaiden: Saiyajin Zetsumetsu Keikaku. He is a scientist of the Tuffle race and the last of the two of his kind (the other being Baby). After escaping planet Vegeta, he hid on the Dark Planet planning his plot to destroy the remaining Saiyans. To live longer and be stronger, he turned himself into an android. To kill the remaining Saiyans (Goku, Gohan, Vegeta and Trunks), he sent demons which he created to invade Earth and to flood the planet with Destron gas so the fighters' energy attacks would be useless. Also to fight the Saiyans, he created ghosts of Frieza, Cooler, Lord Slug and Turles. He was later killed by Goku on the Dark Planet.

Uub

Uub (ウーブ, Ūbu^?), known as Oob in the Viz manga and in Japanese versions, is the reincarnation of the evil Majin Buu. After Kid Buu is destroyed, Goku asks him to be reincarnated as a good person, Uub who is born from a small village, so they may battle again. King Yemma overhears the request and complies with it. Goku eventually senses Uub's hidden power, and seeks him out when Uub attends the tournament to gain money for his village. Goku ends up deciding to train him to be Earth's new guardian and as an opponent that he can battle. In Dragon Ball GT, Mr. Buu enters Uub's body, making him into "Majuub" to face threats such as Baby, Super #17, and the Shadow Dragons. He is voiced by Megumi Urawa in Japan and Kara Edwards (Kid Uub) and Sean Teague (Teen Uub) in the FUNimation dub.

Videl

Videl (ビーデル, Bīderu^?) is the daughter of Hercule. Like her father, she trains in martial arts, even surpassing him in strength.^[33] She uses her abilities to fight crime in the city, and after Gohan appears as the Great Saiyaman, she quickly figures out his identity. She uses that to blackmail him into showing her how to fly. After Buu is fully defeated, the two form a relationship, eventually become married, and have a child named Pan. When the two fight crime together afterwards, she takes on the role of the "Great Saiyaman 2 or Great Saiyawoman". She is voiced by Yuko Minaguchi in Japan, Moneca Stori in the Ocean dub, and Kara Edwards in the Funimation dub. Her name is an anagram of Devil, a play on words with her father's Japanese name (Mr. Satan).

Yajirobe

Yajirobe (ヤジロベー, Yajirobē^?) is an overweight samurai that Goku meets in Dragon Ball. He is often considered to be rude, unmannered, timid, lazy, and cowardly. He helps Goku prepare for the battle against Piccolo Daimao, and continues to support Goku and his companions, though often from the sidelines. He trains under Kami with the others in order to prepare for the Saiyans, and helps in their victory by cutting off Vegeta's tail. During Dragon Ball, he is a wanderer that lives off the land, but after meeting Korin and discovering the Senzu Beans, which provide the nutrients of ten days worth of meals, restores energy and heals wounds, he decides to live with Korin. He begins growing the beans with him, and often delivers them to Goku and his companions. He is voiced by Mayumi Tanaka in Japan, Brian Drummond in the Ocean Group dub, and Mike McFarland in the Funimation dub.

Android #8

Android #8 (人造人間8号, Jinzōningen Hachi Gō^?, Artificial Human #8) is the first android seen in the series, and the eighth in the series of androids built by Dr. Gero. He is originally used as a last resort by the Red Ribbon Army's Muscle Tower, but when he is ordered to fight Goku, he refuses and states that he hates violence. Goku quickly befriends him, nicknaming him "Eighter", and the two repel the army from Jingle Village. He later takes up residence with a young girl named Snow (スノ, Suno^?), who Goku had saved from the army earlier. He is voiced by Shozo Iizuka in Japan and Mike McFarland in the Funimation dub.

Android #16

Android #16 (人造人間16号, Jinzōningen Jū Roku Gō^?, Artificial Human #16) is a large android developed by Dr. Gero. He is deemed a failure, and is deactivated until Android #18 reactivates and releases him.^[34]^[35] Despite the other Androids disobeying and killing Dr. Gero, #16 still follows his orders to search for and destroy Goku. Unlike the other two, #16 processes a sophisticated mechanism to sense and track power levels in real time.^[36]^[37] While trying to protect #17 and #18 from Cell, he is greatly damaged^[38]^[39], though Bulma and her father Dr. Briefs repair him. After he is repaired, he ignores his old orders to kill Goku, and focuses on the fight against Cell. Like the other androids he had the ability to self destruct, but the device was removed during his repairs. This is made known only when #16 tried to self destruct and destroy Cell, which Cell retaliates by destroying most of #16.^[40]^[41] His head and consciousness survived, but later is destroyed by Cell, which pushes Gohan over the edge to Super Saiyan 2.^[42]^[43] In the anime he is voiced Hikaru Midorikawa in Japan,^[44] Jeremy Inman in the Funimation dub,^[45] and Scott McNeil in the Ocean Group dub. ^[46]

Android #19

Android #19 (人造人間19号, Jinzōningen Jū Kyū Gō^?) is a rather fat android created by Dr. Gero. With pale skin and a mechanized voice, he is the most loyal of Gero's creations and even helped the doctor become an android himself. He is an energy absorbing model, equipped with the ability to drain the life force from his enemies. After successfully draining Goku of his energy, 19 is brutally executed by Vegeta. He is voiced by Phillip Wilburn in the English dub.

Bardock

Bardock (バーダック, Bādakku^?) is first introduced in the animated television special, Bardock - The Father of Goku. It was only after its airing in Japan that Bardock was later shown in two panels of the Dragon Ball manga by Toriyama, who helped design the character for Toei Doga's television production.^[47] While the Viz manga and Funimation's Japanese-language English-subtitled anime^[48] both use "Burdock", Funimation's English anime dubs use "Bardock",^[49] and some Japanese merchandise even use "Barduck".^[50]

The biological father of Raditz and Goku, Bardock is a Saiyan who is given the gift of precognition during one of his battles. In several of his recurring visions, he witnesses the destruction of his home planet by the hand of Frieza. After escaping certain death from Dodoria, he tries desperately to change his planet's grim future by attempting to combat Frieza and his legion of men head on. Bardock ultimately fails on ceasing Frieza's attack on the planet and is killed in the process. Moments before his death, he receives a vision of his son facing Frieza. In the Japanese version of the special, Bardock was estimated a power level of 10,000 by observant doctors while recovering from his last mission.^[51] He is voiced by Masako Nozawa in the Japanese version and Sonny Strait in the Funimation dub.

Broly

Broly (ブロリー, Burorī^?), is the featured supervillain in the eighth, tenth, and eleventh movies of the series. He is born with a level of power greater than most elite Saiyan warriors, and he is mentally unsettled as an adult, partially due to the crying of the infant Goku in the incubator next to him when they were born. He eventually becomes the "Legendary Super Saiyan" and his destructive tendencies are quelled by a special control device created by scientists for his father, Paragus. After Paragus lures Vegeta, Goku, and their companions to another planet, Broly recalls Goku and goes into a rage. He is eventually defeated, and manages to make his way into an escape pod. He later lands on Earth and goes into a frozen state until the crying of Goku's son, Goten, awakens him. He is killed by Goku, Gohan and Goten, though blood samples make their way into the hands of an industrialist who creates cloned warriors. The clone eventually awakens and becomes mixed with bio-liquid, transforming him into Bio-Broly. He is eventually killed by Goten, Trunks, and Krillin. He is voiced by Bin Shimada in Japanese, and Vic Mignogna in the Funimation dub.

Cooler

Cooler (クウラ, Kuura^?) is the main villain in the fifth and sixth Dragon Ball Z films and a minor villain in the OVA special Plan to Destroy the Saiyans. He is the brother of Frieza who travels to Earth in Cooler's Revenge to seek revenge on Goku, who had ruined Cooler's family honor by killing Frieza. Despite transforming into his final form, he is defeated by Super Saiyan Goku. He returns in Return of Cooler, his remains having combined with the Big Gete Star, a sentient planet-sized machine. This gives him the ability to create an indefinite amount of Meta-Coolers, which have the ability to constantly repair and improve upon themselves. He tries to consume the planet New Namek, but he is eventually destroyed by the efforts of Goku and Vegeta. He is later resurrected as a ghost by Dr. Raichi in Plan to Destroy the Saiyans along with Frieza, Slug and Turles but was defeated along with them when Goku and the fighters realized they were ghosts and shouted out that they weren't real. He is voiced by Ryūsei Nakao in the Japanese films and Andrew Chandler in the English versions.

Cui

Cui (キュイ, Kyui^?), known as Kiwi in the Viz manga, is a high-ranking henchman of Frieza. He is the rival of Vegeta, and bears much ill-will towards him. After learning of Vegeta's plans to obtain the Dragonballs, Cui sets out to kill him. Initially, it appears as if Cui is much stronger than his rival, but it soon becomes apparent that Vegeta was hiding his true power (a skill that he obtained during his time on Earth). Despite Cui's efforts, Vegeta easily dispatches of him. He is voiced by Kōji Totani in Japan, Jason Gray-Stanford in the Ocean Group dub and Bill Townsley in the Funimation dub.

Dodoria

Dodoria (ドドリア, Dodoria^?) is one of Frieza's top two henchmen. He is a large, fat, pink alien with short spikes on his head and forearms. He travels with Frieza and Zarbon to planet Namek in search of the Dragon Balls. While interrogating villagers, they are interrupted as Krillin and Gohan save Dende from being killed. Dodoria pursues them, but he soon encounters Vegeta. After being outmatched, he tells the truth about the destruction of Planet Vegeta, hoping it would aid in sparing his life, but he is still killed by Vegeta. He is voiced by Yukitoshi Hori in Japan, Ward Perry in the Ocean Group dub, and Chris Forbis in the Funimation dub.

Dr. Gero

Dr. Gero (ドクター・ゲロ, Dokutā Gero^?) is the former chief scientist of the Red Ribbon Army. After the destruction of the organization, he begins using his development of androids to aid in destroying Goku for revenge. While creating a series of androids, he eventually implants his own brain into an exact replica of his body, becoming Android #20. Both he and Android #19, a round, pale android, are able to absorb the energy of others using small devices on their hands. The two eventually attack Goku and his friends. #19 manages to defeat Goku while he is being affected by his heart virus, but he is easily killed by Vegeta afterwards. Gero flees, attempting to release #17 and #18 as a last resort, though #17 quickly kills him. Gero appears once more in Dragon Ball GT, planning to return to Earth along with Dr. Myu by creating another Android #17. They succeed, though Myu betrays Gero and has the newly formed Super 17 kill him once again. He is voiced by Kōji Yada in Japan, Kent Williams in the Funimation dub, and Brian Dobson in the Ocean Group dub.

Elder Kai

The Elder Kai (老界王神, Rō Kaiōshin^?), also known as the Old Kai is a Supreme Kai sealed in the Z Sword for many generations. He resembles the East Supreme Kai, but with an older, wrinkled face, and a small mustache. He was originally youthful, but he accidentally became fused with a witch that stole one of his Potara Fusion Earrings. This granted him the ability to unleash a being's full potential through a long and tedious ceremony. He uses this to make Gohan stronger after Gohan releases him from the Z Sword. He later sacrifices his life to revive Goku, though as he is already in the afterlife, he only gains a halo. His life is later restored by the Namekian Dragon Balls. During Dragon Ball GT, he helps Goku become much stronger by helping him regrow his tail. He is voiced by Reizô Nomoto in Japan, Kent Williams in the Funimation dub, and Scott McNeil in the Ocean Group dub.

Emperor Pilaf

Emperor Pilaf (ピラフ, Pirafu^?) is a small, impish man who dreams of ruling the world. Though he proclaims himself an emperor, he actually only has a crown and a castle. Along with his two minions, Mai (マイ, Mai^?), a woman that wears a trench coat, and Shu (シュウ, Shū^?), a humanoid dog in a ninja outfit, he seeks out the Dragon Balls to wish for world domination. After obtaining the Dragon Balls once, he is foiled by Goku and his companions after another wish is granted just before he can speak his fully. He continues to antagonize Goku throughout the rest of Dragon Ball, and while attempting to obtain the Dragon Balls, releases Piccolo Daimao from his confinement. They appear again in Dragon Ball GT, where they obtain the Black Star Dragon Balls and accidentally wish Goku to be a child again. Pilaf is voiced by Shigeru Chiba in Japan and Chuck Huber in English dub. Shu is voiced by Tesshō Genda in Japan and Chris Cason in the English dub. Mai is voiced by Eiko Yamada in Japan and Julie Franklin in the Funimation dub. She was played by Eriko Tamura in the live-action film Dragonball Evolution.

Evil Dragons

The Evil Dragons, known as the Shadow Dragons in the English versions, are a group of evil beings born from the evil energy caused by overuse of the Dragon Balls. When attempting to repair the damage caused by Super Android 17, the cigar-smoking Evil Shenron is summoned from the Dragon Balls instead of the regular Shenron. He splits into seven dragons, each containing a Dragon Ball. They are known as the One-Star through Seven-Star Dragons in Japan, and Syn Shenron, Haze Shenron, Eis Shenron, Nuova Shenron, Rage Shenron, Oceanus Shenron, and Naturon Shenron in the English versions.

Goku and Pan kill all of the dragons besides the One-Star, Four-Star, and Three-Star Dragons, and collect their Dragon Balls. Goku soon fights the Four-Star Dragon, voiced by Ken Yamaguchi in Japan and John Burgmeier in the English dub, who is fire-based and much more honorable than his siblings. The fight is soon interrupted by the Three-Star Dragon, who blinds Goku in an attempt to kill him. Goku eventually manages to kill the dragon, and when the Four-Star Dragon attempts to help Goku with his eyes, he is killed by One-Star Dragon, voiced by Hidekatsu Shibata in Japan and Bob Carter and Christopher R. Sabat in the English dub. The dragon absorbs the Dragon Balls, transforming into Omega Shenron. After a long battle, he is killed by Goku's Super Genki Dama, and the Dragon Balls are purified.

Garlic Jr.

Garlic Jr. (ガーリック・ジュニア, Gārikku Junia^?) is the main antagonist in Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone and is one of the few original characters from the movies to appear in the TV series. His father was imprisoned by Kami in the realm of darkness, leaving Garlic Jr. with a deep feeling of resentment and desire for revenge. In the Dead Zone, he manages to obtain the seven Dragon Balls, wish for immortality, and begin his quest for revenge. He is defeated when faced with an angry Gohan, who pushes Garlic Jr. into the Dead Zone, an alternate dimension he can freely open.

In the TV series, he breaks free using his power source, the Makyo world, leading to the events of the Garlic Jr. arc. After attempting to brainwash the world with the Black Water Mist, he is once again trapped in the Dead Zone after the destruction of the Makyo World. In the original Japanese version, Garlic Jr. is voiced by Akira Kamiya in Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone and Shigeru Chiba in the anime. He is voiced by Don Brown in the Ocean Group dub of the film and Dave Ward in the Ocean Group dub of the anime. Chuck Huber voices Garlic Jr. in the Funimation dub of the film and anime.

Ginyu Force

The Ginyu Force (ギニュー特戦隊, Ginyū Tokusentai^?) is a team of five mercenaries who are hired by Frieza. Though physically some of the strongest individuals in the universe, the Ginyu Force's members delight in coming up with strange poses, betting candy on fights, and playing Janken. They are led by Captain Ginyu (ギニュー隊長, Ginyū Taichō^?), who has a unique technique that allows him to switch bodies with his opponents. Jeice (ジース, Jīsu^?), a flamboyant and showy mutant, and Burter (バータ, Bāta^?), the self proclaimed fastest being in the universe, are two beings nicknamed the "Red Magma" and "Blue Hurricane" that utilise various combination attacks in battle. Recoome (リクーム, Rikūmu^?) is a large humanoid that likes to toy with his opponents. Guldo (グルド, Gurudo^?), although physically the weakest, has various psychic abilities, including being able to freeze time when he holds his breath.

Frieza calls upon them to assist in the defeat of Vegeta and help obtain the Dragon Balls on Planet Namek. Guldo is killed by Vegeta, Recoome and Burter are defeated by Goku, and Jeice is defeated by Vegeta. Ginyu manages to steal Goku's body, but he is unable to utilise its full power. He decides to steal Vegeta's body after Goku's can no longer be used, but he inadvertently switches bodies with a frog instead. He is allowed to flee, and ends up on Earth after Namek explodes.

In the anime, they appear at King Kai's planet in the afterlife and battle Tien, Yamcha and Chiaotzu, who defeat and banish them to Hell. Tien defeats Jeice and Burter, Yamcha defeats Recoome, and Chiaotzu defeats Guldo. King Kai reveals that he actually invited the Ginyu Force there in order for Tien, Yamcha and Chiaotzu to test their new strength.

Grandpa Gohan

Grandpa Gohan (孫悟飯じいさん, Son Gohan jiisan^?) is the adoptive grandfather of Goku, whom he found in a crashed spaceship. He teaches Goku martial arts, having originally studied under Roshi, and he even knows Roshi's Kamehameha.^[52] He is killed by Goku as a rampaging Oozaru on a night with a full moon, though Goku does not realize it for many years. He is allowed to return to life for one day by Baba in order to fight Goku and anticipate his growth, and he later appears as an assistant to Annin, the ruler of the "magical furnace". He is only shown in flashbacks afterwards. He is voiced by Osamu Saka in Japan and Christopher Sabat in the Funimation dub. He is portrayed by Randall Duk Kim in the live-action film Dragonball Evolution.

Kai

The Kai (界王, Kaiō^?) are upper-level gods of the Dragon Ball universe. There are five at a time that rule over the main galaxy of the universe, with one presiding over each of the four quadrants in a galaxy, and the last overseeing them all. The Kai are responsible for the lower-level gods, who rule over individual planets. The Kai reside in the heavens, with each having their own small planet. There is a sense of competition among the Kai over whose quadrant has the best fighters. King Kai, the Northern Kai, trains Goku after his self-sacrifice to defeat Raditz.

The Grand Kai rules over the North, South, East, and West Kai. He is portrayed as an aged hipster, wearing jeans and a denim jacket and constantly listening to rock music on his boom box. His characterization in the anime was suggested to the production staff by Toriyama himself.^[53]

These Kai are less powerful than the Supreme Kai, who each oversee a quadrant of the entire universe, and are ruled by the Grand Supreme Kai.

Launch

Launch (ランチ, Ranchi^?), known as Marilynn in the Harmony Gold dub and Lunch in the Viz manga and Japanese versions, is Roshi's house maid retrieved by Goku and Krillin in order to receive martial arts training from him. She has a dissociative identity disorder; whenever she gets her sensitive nose tickled to the point of sneezing, she switches between a sweet, innocent girl with indigo hair to a blonde woman who commits crimes for fun. Their memories are not shared, though both sides are aware of each other. In the anime, she further attempts to pursue a relationship with Tien, but fails to make any progress due to his constant training. She is voiced by Mami Koyama in Japan, and Monika Antonelli, as the good girl side, and Meredith McCoy, as the bad girl side in the Funimation dub.

Porunga

Porunga (ポルンガ^?) is the wish granting dragon summoned when all of Namek's Dragon Balls are gathered. Unlike Shenron, he has a large, muscular upper body and various Namekian traits. He can grant three wishes, so long as they don't exceed his creator's power, his creator is still alive, and each request is delivered in the Namekian dialect. Initially, Porunga had the ability to bring only one person back to life at a time, but could bring that same person back multiple times if requested. This as compared to Shenron, who can bring back an unspecified number of people as long as they died under similar circumstances, but could only bring each specific individual back once, and as long as their deaths weren't of natural causes. Later, Porunga's power is strengthened to bring back as many lives as needed. He is voiced by Junpei Takiguchi and Daisuke Gōri in Japan, Christopher Sabat in the Funimation dub, and Don Brown in the Ocean Group dub.

Raditz

Raditz (ラディッツ, Radittsu^?) is the biological brother of Son Goku and the eldest son of Bardock. Raditz went to Earth to help in the planet's invasion, and to persuade his younger brother Goku to join the Saiyans in their conquest. However, disappointed to discover that Goku had lost his memories and adjusted to life on Earth, Raditz kidnapped Gohan and tried to force Goku to help him. During his battle with Goku and Piccolo, Gohan seeing his father in danger explodes with rage and delivers a massive amount of damage to Raditz in a single blow. Taking advantage of the situation, Goku puts Raditz in a full nelson and demands Piccolo to kill them both with the Makankosappo (Special Beam Cannon). Just before his death, he sneered that two more powerful Saiyans, Vegeta and Nappa, would be coming to Earth in one year's time. He is voiced by Shigeru Chiba in Japan, Jason Gray-Stanford in the Ocean Group dub, and Justin Cook in the Funimation dub

Red Ribbon Army

The Red Ribbon Army (レッドリボン軍, Reddo Ribon Gun^?) is a military organization bent on total world domination. Originally a technological cooperation, they lost out to the Capsule Corporation, and focused their technology on military weapons. They plan on obtaining the Dragon Balls to help with their goal, using any means necessary including raiding towns, hiring the mercenary, Mercenary Tao to attack Goku, among others. Despite this, Goku is able to wipe out the entire army. The quest for world domination turns out to be a ruse by their leader Commander Red. He is a short man, who really plans on using them to become taller, even if the whole army has to be sacrificed. The second in command is Adjutant Black (ブラック参謀^?), who loyally obeys Red until hearing of his plan, at which point, he kills Red and attempts to take over, only to be killed by Goku.

General Blue is a high-ranking official of the army. He comes into contact with Goku and his companions multiple times, often using a special psionic ability that allows him to paralyze other individuals. He manages to steal the Dragon Radar during their final encounter, but after returning, he is set to be executed for not obtaining any of the Dragon Balls after multiple failures. He is allowed to fight Tao to redeem himself, though Tao easily kills Blue only using his tongue. Blue is voiced by Toshio Furukawa in Japan and Sonny Strait in the Funimation dub.

Zarbon

Zarbon (ザーボン, Zābon^?) is one of Frieza's top two henchmen. He has the ability to transform into a powerful reptilian beast. Zarbon travels to Namek alongside Frieza and Dodoria to help collect the Dragon Balls. He eventually comes into contact with Vegeta, whom Zarbon manages to easily defeat and capture after transforming. After Zarbon retrieves Vegeta's battered body and brings him to Frieza's ship in order to heal him for interrogation, Vegeta manages to escape. Zarbon sets out to find him once again, but Vegeta, having become stronger after healing, kills Zarbon. Zarbon also appears in Bardock - The Father of Goku, where he advises Frieza to destroy the Saiyan planet and briefly appears in Dragon Ball GT when he escapes from Hell with other villains. He is voiced by Sho Hayami in Japan, Paul Dobson in the Ocean Group dub and Christopher Sabat in the Funimation dub.

Gohan's Abilities

As a child, Gohan is depicted with a seemingly limitless dormant power, which at first only revealed itself when he experienced fierce rage or distress.^[27]^[28]

Due to his mixed heritage, Gohan's character also exhibits unusual abilities, possessing power that surpasses that of regular Saiyans.^[9] Vegeta suggests that mixing human and Saiyan blood begets powerful hybrids, which Nappa refers to as a Super Saiyan.^[29] On Namek, Saichoro helped unlock a portion of his untapped potential, unable to bring out the fullest of his tremendous latent abilities.^[30]

Gohan can also freely manipulate his chi for the use of abilities such as the Bukû-jutsu (舞空術^?, lit. "lighter than air skill" or "sky dancing skill"), enabling him to fly,^[31] or concentrate it into beams of chi energy blasts, such as the Kamehameha or Masenko (魔閃光, Masenkō^?, lit. "Demon Flash"). Gohan also possesses enhanced strength,^[32] as well as superhuman speed and reflexes.^[33] He is able to ascend to Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 levels.

Gohan's Appearance

As opposed to full-blooded Saiyans, whose hair stays the same from birth,^[4] Gohan's is drawn at varying lengths, and changes markedly in style. Many of Yamcha's hairstyles are used by Gohan at various points in his life.^[5]

Initially, Gohan is illustrated garbed in a Hanfu-like surcoat with the Chinese character 孫^?, fixed on the front and the four-star Dragon Ball fitted on top of his hat. Piccolo later supplies him with a keikogi fashioned after Goku's, but substitutes it with the demon character "魔^?" as a sign of his admission into the Demon Tribe.^[6] Normally thereafter, Gohan is drawn with a keikogi modeled after Piccolo's own, with the anime recoloring his wristbands from blue to red and, during the Cell Games tournament, his obi from red to blue, despite reverting to the original colors for the former. On Namek, Gohan is portrayed in battle armor worn by Frieza's henchmen, having been given it by Vegeta in preparation for their encounter with Frieza. Prior to his second fight with Majin Buu, Gohan asks Kibito for an outfit resembling his father's, and is then drawn in a keikogi identical to Goku's.

Gohan's name comes from the Japanese word "gohan" (飯^?, lit. "cooked rice" or "meal of any sort"), is a continuation of the naming scheme of foods by Toriyama. Rice, being a grain, is not normally considered to be a vegetable, even though it is part of a plant. However, as the word "vegetable" is a culinary term, and not a botanical term, the name can also continue the naming scheme for Saiyan characters, which derives names from puns on vegetables (Saiya being an anagram of the word yasai, meaning "vegetable").^{[citation needed]}

In conceptualizing Gohan's character as a teenager, Toriyama originally included glasses or a jacket to his apparel, and commonly, his hair was not spiked up as seen in the final design.^[2] With the ending of the Cell arc, Gohan was meant to replace his father as the main protagonist; Toriyama thought that he was unsuitable for that part so he avoided doing that.^[3]

Goku's Abilities

Through constant training, Goku has achieved many abilities; aside from his great strength, he also possesses super speed,^[16] reflexes and energy blasts by using chi. As a child Goku originally wielded the Nyoi-bō (如意棒, lit. "Mind Stick"^?, renamed "Power pole" in the English dub), a magic staff that extends and retracts on command which was given to him by his grandfather Gohan.^[1] His first known attack was Janken (ジャン拳^?), which he would deliver three chops and punches in rapid sucession, each representing either rock, paper, or scissors.^[17] He also learns, through simple observation, Master Roshi's technique the Kamehameha (かめはめ波^?, lit. "Turtle Striking Wave"),^[18] which then becomes his signature move. Another technique of his is an attack that multiplies the user's chi for an instant, called the Kaiō-ken (界王拳^?, lit. "World King Fist"), taught to him by King Kai.^[19] Originally Goku's main means of conveyance was on a magic cloud called Kinto-un (筋斗雲, lit. "Candy Cloud", renamed "Flying Nimbus" in the English dub^?), which was given to him as a child by Master Roshi for saving Turtle.^[20] After his training with Kami he learns to fly through the technique buku-jutsu (舞空術^?, lit. "Air Dance Technique") and uses the cloud less and less as the series progresses.

Goku's most powerful attack is the Genki Dama (元気玉^?, lit. "Good Spirit Ball", renamed "Spirit Bomb" in the English dub), a powerful sphere created by gathering chi energy from surrounding life forms, which he also learned from King Kai.^[12] Goku also learns a teleportation skill called Shunkan Idō (瞬間移動^?, lit. "Instant Movement", renamed "Instant Transmission" in the English dub), which he learned from the inhabitants of a fictional planet called Yardrat.^[21] His last known attack is Ryu-ken (龍拳, "Dragon Fist"^?), which engulfs Goku in chi that takes the form of a golden color Shenron.^[22]

Goku is also the only Saiyan in the series to achieve all the Saiyan transformations seen in the manga. During the events of Dragon Ball Z, Goku becomes the first Super Saiyan in a millennium after being overcome with rage by the murder of Krillin by the hand of Frieza^[23] and as the series progresses he achieves every single advanced level of Super Saiyan. Each transformation changes Goku's appearance and enhances his abilities.

In Dragon Ball, he is able to transform into a gigantic ape called an Oozaru,^[24] albeit after his tail is removed by Kami, he loses the capacity to achieve this form.^[25] However, in Dragon Ball GT, Goku is able to use this transformation again after regrowing his tail using the Elder Kai's help.^[26]

Goku can also fuse with Vegeta and create a warrior who has the combined power and skills of both. One method is by using the Potara Earrings presented to Goku by the Elder Kai, which results in a 'perfect fusion', creating Vegito.^[27] The other method is by performing the Metamorese Fusion Dance, which creates Gogeta.^[28]
